"Where's the Beef?" is the fourth episode of Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 12, 2008 and garnered 3.65 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

The girls are riding back in the limo home after facing the judges and seeing Allison go home. Dominique takes this moment to warn everyone that she’s coming back from this bottom two performance with a vengeance. Lauren doesn’t know how to feel about the fact that she had the best photo and Fatima suggests she lean into her personality. Amis is often quite energetic and rambunctious which then has Fatima questioning her passion for modeling. The LED screen flashes and everyone gathers around Tyra’s portrait to read the incoming Tyra Mail: “Turn up the heat, or you’ll get hosed.”

The next morning is rainy and when they’re dropped off at a local fire station. As they approach the building an alarm starts sounding. The garage door opens and a group of firefighters slide down the pole from above and drive off in a blaring fire engine. Miss J then slides down to greet the group. They’re about to have a runway teach. Much like first responders reacting to an emergency call, a model at a fashion show will have to get changed as quickly as possible to keep the show flowing. Behind him are outfits for the girls to change into then strut their stuff in 90 seconds.

The girls make a break for the rack of clothes and get into their hats, heels, and suspenders. They line up for an inspection where Miss J calls Fatima out for not having the provided pair of shoes and makes her change into them. Before they walk he invites the group of firefighters into the garage to look on as an audience. Katarzyna steps forward and pops her hip as she struts her stuff. Miss J tells the girls to “take notice” of Claire’s strut. Stacy-Ann needs to let loose while Anya looks like she’s “walking on hot coals.” Dominique is proud of her walk and she fancies herself as fierce. Miss J thinks she flirts a little too much. Fatima “lifts her foot like a clydesdale” which looks like a choppy stomp and lacks rhythm. Lauren, bless her heart, doesn’t know how to walk and Miss J does not expect much; he does see potential in her as a model, however. Amis has a similar problem of lack of concept. She skips and dances and is hard to take seriously.

The girls return to the loft after their walking session. When Aimee declares her intent to shower, some of the girls tell her she can’t just block the bathroom. Apparently she does not want anyone to see her naked at all so they can’t use the toilet or sink while she’s in there. In a house with three bathrooms for 11 girls, that’s a big ask for Marvita. Whitney steps in to defend Aimee, saying that she notified other girls prior about this phobia; Marvita backs down a little bit, not having heard that. Fatima thinks Whitney is trying to get them to fight and calls her out in the midst of the this tense moment. Whitney reminds Dominique of “white trash” and she is wary of her. After they decide to walk away from this argument there’s a new Tyra Mail to read: “Better keep your story straight or you will be out of order.”

Challenge[]

The next day, the Fab Cab drops the models off at a space that looks like an entertainment venue. Miss J is onsite again to welcome them alongside Bryan Bradely, who is a designer for Tuleh. Today they will be walking in a Tuleh fashion show. They must report to hair and makeup right away. Later they are introduced to Andrew Weir, who is the runway show producer. While they’re at it, Miss J also brings in Ann Shoket, editor-in-chief of Seventeen magazine, and Jaslene from Cycle 8. They’re met with cheers from the contestants. Ann says the winner of this challenge will be featured in ad for Lot29 in Seventeen.

Miss J then announces a twist to the challenge. The girls will have to dress themselves with no help and they will only have three minutes to do so. There are racks for each model with their outfits and a little style guide for instructions on how to wear the clothes. Miss J gets the show going as they change. Stacy-Ann walks first in a red flowing dress and stays focused. Whitney doesn’t realize until she’s already onstage that her bra is not quite on all the way. Lauren looks nervous and hurried with a deer-in-headlights look on her face. She doesn’t even stop to pose. Aimee, Katarzyna and Fatima walk next and they've all got their own kind of swagger. Fatima has a button fit through the wrong hole on the front of her blouse. Dominique, Marvita and Claire have their shot in the spotlights and show off their garments. Anya looks pretty and peppy after them. Amis shuffles a bit but she is enjoying herself and feels like she’s serving.

After they all walk, Ann, Jaslene and Bryan meet them backstage to give them feedback. Aimee and Katarzyna receive good feedback while Fatima’s button mishap is called out. Jaslene asks Lauren if she wants to be a model or not because her walk was that uncomfortable to watch. Ann announces the winner of the challenge is Katarzyna. She gets to pick two friends (Amis and Marvita) to be in the prize shoot with her.

The three of them head over to a studio with Jaslene to meet Janice Welles, a marketing director at Lot29. They take a couple of group shots and Katarzyna gets a photo of just her and Jaslene. Back at the house, Lauren is shaken by the critique she received earlier. She gets emotional when she thinks about how much she has put herself through to get where she is now. Someone in the distance yells to gather around for a Tyra Mail: “Prove that you’ve got the chops for this competition or you’ll be sent packing.”

Photoshoot[]

The competition takes them to the meat-packing district where they find themselves inside a warehouse. Jay Manuel in a frosty-white coat comes out to greet them. In this photoshoot the girls are going to be posing with hunks of meat. Their garments are also made out of meat. The intent here is to be provocative, which is what sells in the fashion industry. They head into hair and makeup with Christian and Sutan before they behold strips of beef stitched together to form bras and shawls and accessories. Claire and Fatima step onto set first to meet their photographer Trevor O’Shana. Claire goes first and she needs to be reminded to elongate her legs. Fatima engages with the meaty environment but only gives this one "snarling" face; it doesn’t do it for Mr. Jay and he asks her to switch it up. Anya is not afraid of the beef so she gets right up close to it. Katarzyna looks like she’s not quite all the way there and gets a look from Jay although Trevor gives her good feedback. Stacy-Ann makes a face like she’s going to scream, but it looks fake. Whitney’s instinct for posing involves sticking her booty out so Jay asks her to reel it in a little bit. Marvita comes in with authentic energy and nails the shoot. Lauren’s strategy is to look scary and she provides several different poses to the camera. Dominique isn’t going to focus on last week’s performance and just have fun. It seems to work for her as she gets good feedback from Jay. Aimee is a little averse to her surroundings so it’s more difficult for her to get a convincing photo. Amis still doesn’t really know what to do or how to take direction.

This funky shoot finally ends and the girls get to wash up and go home. There’s Tyra Mail to read: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 10 will continue on in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model.”

Judging[]

It’s time for another round of judging at the panel, and all the contestants are worried per usual. Amis doesn’t seem all that worried though, as she’s asleep up until 20 minutes before they leave and wears a questionable outfit when she finally gets ready. Tyra welcomes them back to the judging room and reminds them of the prizes at stake here. The judges tonight are Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Paulina Porizkova and designer Bryan Bradley.

  • Stacy-Ann: Nigel is disappointed in her lack of angst or passion; her pose is a bit basic, a bit “Modeling 101”
  • Whitney: there’s a comedic effect to the photo yet it’s still sexy; her face is expressive
  • Aimee: she looks too static, like a mannequin; Tyra says her film is “boring”; she looks like she doesn’t want to be there
  • Katarzyna: she takes some risks that pay off with her posture; Tyra thinks she’s missing “that something” to make magic as a model here
  • Fatima: her legs look too short; Tyra does not like the growling face which is all she got
  • Anya: Paulina loves the picture; everyone thinks its successful; she looks the most comfortable
  • Claire: Miss J thinks that her face is too distant; Tyra loves the picture as she thinks it’s got great movement
  • Dominique: her body looks a little “squished”; she makes great eye contact with the camera
  • Lauren: it’s noted her walk at the challenge was horrendous; Miss J doesn’t understand how she can be so bad at walking yet look like a high fashion model in photos; judges all agree it’s great
  • Amis: the judges ask her about her panel outfit and she gives an awkward answer; she has such a harsh profile angle; mixed reactions from the judges
  • Marvita: Paulina says she’s beautiful but vacant; there’s a lack of narrative

The judges have been identifying potential in this cohort, and while they’re still looking at what could be, they also want to see concrete progress. Some girls need to step up their game in order to survive this competition while others are making it look easy.
