"Top Model Takes It to the Streets" is the fifth episode of Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 19, 2008 and garnered 3.79 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

Everyone’s back at the loft after another meeting with the judges. Fatima Siad has had a rough realization that she is not doing as well in this competition as she thought. She prances and poses on the catwalk in the living room, practicing. Dominique Reighard and Stacy-Ann are chatting about what happened. Dominique is feeling better now that she has received some positive feedback from the judges. Whitney thinks she’s full of herself. Meanwhile, Marvita is doing her best to connect with the other girls, but she doesn’t feel like anyone is at the same level as her given all of her life’s challenges. She still struggles with being emotionally open. There’s a notification that Tyra Mail is incoming: “You all know your A B C’s but what about the 3 C’s?”

The girls travel to an old warehouse at dusk where it’s even darker inside. There’s a single spotlight which invites them in and when they approach, shadows begin to move on the other side of the room. A voice begins to name different styles of modeling while a spotlight flashes on a model in a different pose. Then a spotlight shines on Benny Ninja alongside supermodel Vendela. They’re going to teach the girls about the three Cs of modeling: commercial, couture and catalog. Benny demonstrates what kinds of poses give each category. Everyone has to show them what they can do. Whitney is a little hoochie, while Lauren doesn’t know the difference between commercial and catalog. Marvita is all over the place. Stacy-Ann and Dominique do high fashion very well. Benny and Vendela thank them for their time and the competition moves on.

The girls are back at the loft and many are looking to use the single phone. There’s a whole set schedule that the girls have. Dominique misses her time slot but doesn’t realize it and becomes upset when the other girls won’t let her have her turn. She claims Whitney didn’t tell her there is a schedule and it’s not her fault. Most seem to take Whitney’s side in this conflict. They share some cross words. Dominique thinks she is disrespectful and accuses her of racism when she’s called “uneducated.” This upsets Whitney, who highly resents that. They go to bed without reconciling. The next morning, the first thing they do is read some Tyra Mail: “The battle is on. You better bring it to the center, and work.”

Challenge[]

They head out to Brooklyn where they find a Vendela waiting for them in front of a large, industrial looking building that’s covered in colorful graffiti. She brings them into a yard to meet Benny Ninja and his team posing on a platform. Benny gets right down to it in explaining the challenge they have set up for them. The group will split into two teams. The girls will compete in one-on-one pose battles where they have to show off what they learned yesterday to earn points. Benny will call out one of the three Cs and the girls will have to serve that as their grand finale. Whichever team scores the most points wins a trip to the “Swag Tent” that contains a bunch of goodies. Team A is Aimee, Lauren, Dominique, Anya and Fatima. Team B is Whitney, Stacy-Ann, Katarzyna, Claire and Marvita. The best poser from the winning team will receive an extra special prize, to be revealed later.

Dominique and Claire go first and they start strong. Benny lives for their couture poses so each of them scores a point for her team. Lauren poses against Marvita next. Lauren goes all out for this challenge to score a point for her team where Marvita falls a little flat. Anya battles Stacy-Ann and she tries really hard because she hasn’t won a challenge yet. Stacy-Ann’s catalog pose scores the point, though. It’s Fatima versus Whitney next; Whitney nails a split like she saw someone do earlier and does the correct pose at the end, scoring a point. Aimee goes up against Katarzyna, where Aimee shows off her flexibility and Katarzyna focuses on “freaky.” The House of Ninja likes freaky, so she scores another point. Team B is declared the winner and, out of the lot, Claire is the best. The winning team goes to collect their prizes from Karen Wood, president of Backstage Creations. They get to fill a bag with sunglasses, handbags and other accessories. Claire wins a trip to Bora Bora for winning the challenge, too.

Fatima is “practicing like crazy” back at the loft. She’s trying to get ready for the next photoshoot by looking in the mirror and walking the catwalk, all the while she wonders if the other girls aren’t taking things seriously enough. Marvita worries that she’s in over her head in this competition. Later on, there’s a Tyra Mail: “LA is all about your car. NYC is all about your coat.”

Photoshoot[]

The Fab Cab drives through the city to the next photoshoot. Jay Manuel is standing on set chatting with Christian and Sutan. Today they are “stripping away” many things a model works with at an average photoshoot. Beauty shots are up close and personal, so there’s nowhere to hide. The fashion edge for the look is “paint splatter” all over their face. They’ll have to match their energy to their strong makeup to stand out. Marvita sulks in a corner while the other girls get ready. Mr. Jay probes her a bit to find out what’s up, and she’s mumbling and unfocused. After realizing that she’s not really interested in chatting, he leaves her be. Before they get started, Jay brings in Peter Buckingham to introduce as the photographer.

Lauren goes first. She feels her look and provides several different angles of her face to the camera. Aimee’s skin looks beautiful and she has intensity in the eyes. Stacy-Ann poses while Jay offers a few pointers. Katarzyna’s shoot starts flat but she finds a look with attitude. Whitney has trouble looking natural and some of her facial expressions are too suggestive. Anya is, like always, enjoying herself. She sticks her tongue out and gives both profile and straight-on options. Claire photographs pretty. Before Dominique shoots Mr. Jay warns her to not look too “severe.” Just trying to have fun with it, she receives great feedback. Fatima is “overanalytical” during her shoot and Jay worries she can’t capture the moment. Marvita does not really seem like she wants to be there. She takes direction but doesn’t commit to anything. Jay confronts her but she doesn’t really offer much of an explanation.

Judging[]

The judges take their places at the desk for another elimination. Nigel Barker, J. Alexander and Paulina Porizkova are joined by Vendela, who is guest judging.

  • Dominique: Tyra is surprised by her softness and fashion look; she looks more “vulnerable” and “intellectual”
  • Anya: she’s lacking power in her eyes (she gets a master class in smizing)
  • Katarzyna: she does the eyes very well like Tyra just demonstrated; sophisticated look
  • Fatima: called out for her armpit hair and is reminded of baseline expectations; the photo is beautiful, however
  • Lauren: wearing Converse to panel because she couldn’t find her heels; wonderful presence in her photo
  • Whitney: looks “self-conscious”; Vendela thinks she might be unserious
  • Claire: she needs a longer neck; good power in the photo
  • Marvita: Tyra asks about her commitment to the competition; there’s some emotion in her photo, although it’s sad; mixed judge reactions
  • Stacy-Ann: great energy; lips are beautiful; film as a whole is not great
  • Aimee: skin looks “luminescent”; Nigel calls her a “chameleon” of a model

Some of the girls, like Dominique and Stacy-Ann, are on an upward trajectory who’s still surprising. Other girls, like Anya and Katarzyna, might not maintain her streak on strong photos. The journey has given everyone a chance to show strength and weaknesses. The judges must decide who’s in it to win it and who doesn’t have what it takes.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike virtually every episode before, Tyra does not remind the competition of the prizes for winning the competition before introducing the judges at panel.
  • It appears that Lauren’s “misplaced” heels she was expected to wear at judging were taken by production, as Tyra shows that she has the missing shoes with her under the desk during deliberation.
