"Top Model Makeovers" is the third episode of Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 5, 2008 and garnered 3.52 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
The girls are back at the loft after the judging. Dominique is not feeling well about how she performed last week so she needs to get her head in the game. Suddenly, the doorbell rings, and they must have been anticipating something because they all start happily screaming. Waiting outside the door are leather bags, one for every girl, with Apple Bottom brand items in them. Some are stoked to receive the gifts, while Lauren evaluates her idea of fashion which is different from the rest of her peers. As everyone examines their goodies, Allison sits alone and stoic. She tries on her pair of jeans with the rest of them after a while. Fatima comments that Allison’s butt is bigger than hers, and that she’s just a bigger person than her. This upsets Allison, commenting that she has struggled with eating disorders in the past, and she walks away. Fatima feels sorry she said that, but she didn’t know and should have thought before she spoke. There’s a notification of incoming Tyra Mail: “You never when you’ll get that next call, a top model is prepared for all.”
Challenge[]
The wake-up call comes very early the next morning. The girls are in the Fab Cab at 5:00 a.m. to be driven to a Walmart. In the cosmetics department of the store, Brent Poer and Molly Stern wait for the models. They introduce themselves as representatives for CoverGirl, and they have a makeup challenge set up for them to test their ability to become prepared for a casting call at a moment’s notice. Brent reveals that the girl who eventually wins the title of “America’s Next Top Model” will have her face featured on CoverGirl kiosks in Walmarts nationwide. He then gets into the challenge: the girls will have five minutes to shop the cosmetics wall behind him and get into a clean, fresh, natural look. Molly then adds a few rules: every look must use Outlast All-day Lip Color, TruBlend liquid foundation, and the all-new LashBlast mascara. Whoever puts on the best face wins.
Lauren is putting on makeup for the first time here; she has no idea what she’s doing. It doesn’t help that there’s very little mirror space for 12 girls to be using at the same time. It’s chaos everyone squeezes together while they work. Once the time’s up, Brent and Molly offer some feedback. Claire’s lip looks great while Lauren’s look is a little pale. Whitney has a great lip color and Fatima’s makeup isn’t quite right as she needs color. Allison looks great but she has too much product on. The winner of the challenge is Claire due to her technique and fresh-looking result. She’s going to have her photo featured on Wal-mart’s CoverGirl website.
They return to the house by midday and they await their next move. Claire and Dominique talk about being mothers, and what it means to be in the running in this competition. Meanwhile, Allison uses a pair of dolls to vent her frustration about Fatima calling her big. She has a black doll and a white doll, and she stuffs the black doll’s skirt with paper and calls it fat. Fatima can see her doing this, but does not give her a rise. Allison then says a sexual expletive which finally prompts Fatima to address her in anger. Both girls exchange some words and are finished with each other. There’s another Tyra Mail that flashes across the screen: “This competition is tough. Don’t you just want to curl up and dye?”
Makeovers[]
The girls scream because they noted the spelling of “dye” and that can only mean one thing: makeovers! They head into the cab and travel to the Stephen Knoll Salon where they will transform. Mr. Jay and Miss J greet them; this time around Tyra has been secretive about her plans for the makeovers. They don’t even know what’s going on. Tyra comes in through the door behind the Jays to say hello and address the group. She introduces Stephen Knoll who will be conducting the makeovers. Sometimes, she says, an agency will decide the most marketable look for a model. These models will have to have their hair done without knowing what they’re going to get. That’s what’s going to happen today for these makeovers for a little dose of reality. After they’re finished in the chair they will report to a “very sexy photoshoot.”
While we see twelve nervous girls go through the process of cutting, bleaching, coloring and styling, Tyra tells viewers via an overlayed “Tyra-vision” screen her intent behind the transformations:
- Anya: going so platinum it’s almost white, keeping it medium-long too
- Whitney: “a sexy, curvy girl needs sexy, long, curly hair” so she’s getting a weave; going light blonde as well
- Aimee: since she’s already got what it takes her new look just needs to go to the next level; that looks like long, straight bangs and tight waves down to her shoulders; a little bit of red highlights for an edge
- Marvita: getting a “horse mane hair weave”; keeping the sides short like she has it and making it long on top and down the back
- Lauren: getting a long blonde weave with reddish highlights
- Katarzyna: going for a darker hair as Tyra envisions her as a “baby Paulina”
- Claire: she’s getting the other side of her head shaven to match the other for a pixie cut look then dyeing it all blonde
- Fatima: she needs new color, so she’s getting chestnut-brown coloring and a weave down to her waist
- Allison: going a little bit lighter and longer, with a reddish-orange color and lots of volume
- Dominique: she’s getting an edgier and harder look, going for a short, styled bob
- Stacy-Ann: with her beautiful bone structure, she doesn’t need much hair; she gets a spiky pixie cut
- Amis: the shape of her head is suited for long hair so she gets a blonde weave
Anya is thrilled with her look. She thinks it makes her look much more sophisticated. Whitney thinks that her new look will help her tap into her “bubbly, girly” side. Marvita doesn’t know what to think at first about her different look but she’ll make it her own. Lauren’s had just about every hair style and color in the books . . . except for long and blonde, so she’s feeling girlier than ever. Fatima has never had a weave before and she didn’t realize it’d be so painful. Stacy-Ann wanted something long but the opposite happened so she has no choice but to bring it.
The Tyra Mail screen flashes when they return to the loft: “You’ve worked the clothes, the makeup and the hair. Now it’s time to work with ‘The Body.’”
Photoshoot[]
The next morning calls early on a gloomy morning and the girls meet Jay Manuel by a pier. Their photoshoot today will take place on a boat with the Brooklyn Bridge and the city as a backdrop. Jay introduces George Holz who will serve as photographer for ANTM for the second time. They get on the boat where there’s makeup stations and racks of clothes set up. Mr. Jay also says he forgot to mention that Elle Macpherson is on board with them and she turns around to say hello. The girls will be modeling her lingerie line, Elle Macpherson Intimates, in their shoot today. Elle mingles with each contestant as they get ready and offers advice on how to style their looks.
Fatima steps up to the deck to shoot her frames. Her new hair catches the wind and Elle and Jay like what they see. Anya needs a little coaching to coordinate her posing with the right facial expression. Claire has a lot of energy in her shoot, where she delivers smiling and seriousness. Whitney’s clothing is really tight and restrictive so she’s in turn limited in her movement but Elle compliments her. Stacy-Ann “looks like a statue.” Katarzyna makes her legs look long with several different poses. Lauren feels awkward in her clothes so she has a hard time embracing that on top of her makeover. Marvita is fierce and serious and makes good eye contact. Allison is confident going into her shoot, but Mr. Jay clocks her look as too “studied” which rattles her. Amis has a hard time taking direction from George and he gets audibly frustrated. Aimee looks like a “superhero doll” to Jay. Dominique tried her best but Mr. Jay doesn’t think any of her posing landed as high fashion. When they finish shooting Elle thanks them for their hard work and bids farewell.
The Tyra Mail screen flashes and it shows a familiar message: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 11 will continue on in the hopes of becoming ‘America’s Next Top Model.’” The girls await the next panel on the collective edge.
Judging[]
The judges this evening are Nigel Barker, J. Alexander and Paulina Porizkova with George Holz as guest judge.
- Amis: great look in her eyes; she’s got what it takes but the body positioning needs work
- Lauren: super long legs; her awkwardness lends itself to high fashion; she needs to study her looks
- Marvita: she looks like a “panther in an urban jungle”
- Claire: she looks great, only note is to relax her mouth when she raises her eyebrows
- Fatima: she looks just like Iman; she models from the waist-up, legs looks uncomfortable
- Katarzyna: she’s giving “sex kitten” to Miss J but “Mail-Order Bride #1” to Paulina
- Stacy-Ann: Miss J wants neck extension; she could show off her jawline more
- Dominique: needs to know what to show and what to hide for the camera; Tyra challenges her to show her “swagger” more
- Aimee: beautiful skin; she is very close to a perfect pose, just needs fine-tuning
- Anya: shot has great energy: Tyra thinks it’s fierce while Paulina finds it underwhelming
- Allison: Nigel doesn’t think she put any of her assets to work; eyes are “far away”
- Whitney: Tyra thinks she’s too covered up; there was a problem in styling, not necessarily her posing
The judges are interested in what the girls are bringing to the second panel of the cycle. They’re particularly talking about the impressions they get from their in-person presences as they compare that to what they see on film. There are some diamonds in the rough and there’s some fool’s gold as well, they suspect. The panel is still looking for potential this early on in the competition.
