"The Girls Who Hate Their Makeovers" is the second episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 9, 2005 and garnered 5.12 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

The girls report to Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. Mr. Jay is there to tell them that they will not be going to New York but rather staying in L.A. throughout the competition. He then invites them inside the studio where they approach a film scene in action. Out of the police cars come Janice, Nigel, and Nolé dressed in officer uniforms with cameras who begin their first photoshoot of the cycle right then and there. Danilo and Mathu Andersen again are part of the Top Model team to get the girls ready in hair and makeup.

Photoshoot[]

The theme of the photoshoot is an NYPD crime scene. The models will pose in front of a squad car with caution tape and smoke going for a rugged look. Kahlen is first to shoot. She feels nervous but Nigel and Mr. Jay love how she poses and how quickly she got the perfect frame. While the shoot starts, Janice mingles with the girls backstage. Rebecca gives Nigel a “Twiggy-esque” feel about the way she moved. Keenyah is complimented on her beauty during her turn. Jay notices that Lluvy only has one expression throughout the shoot. Brittany was bubbly between balancing poses for her shot. Michelle intrigues Nigel with her background in wrestling and he notes her androgynous look. Tatiana is confident and she delivers a variety of different poses. Naima was drawing her inspiration from Star Trek as she feels like an “alien.” Brandy is one of the last models to get in front of the camera. As time goes on, she becomes more impatient and begins to show that in her body language and even complains in front of Nolé. This miffs Nolé so much that he says something to Nigel, and Brandy admits to being sleepy and irritated. Despite the shaky start, Brandy finishes feeling confident. Noelle look is eye-popping but she took a moment to give enough energy. Sarah wows both Jay and Nolé; Jay even slips in that her shot might be his favorite of the day. Brita is uncomfortable in her garment and is tense because of it. Nigel tells her that she needs to relax and focus on getting the shot. Christina was a “lovely addition” to the shoot. Tiffany is new to photoshoots and doesn’t understand the directions she’s given initially; after a bit her frames turn out well. After wrap, Jay congratulates the girls for their good work and hands them their first piece of Tyra Mail: “Now that you’ve taken your very first shot, it’s time to celebrate at L.A.’s finest spot. So enjoy the night and all that you see, and take a ride into pure luxury.”

The girls get into the vans and instead of taking them to somewhere upscale in a hot neighborhood like they expected, they arrive outside a seedy looking establishment in the outskirts of town. A biker gang with a rottweiler approaches them and invites them inside. They are actually at the showroom of Serious Clothing, and the gang are a group of the brand’s designers. The girls are invited to browse the clothes they have there. In the back of the showroom, doors open to reveal that the entire industrial pavilion has been renovated as a luxurious loft for the girls to live in. The space is Los Angeles themed, neighborhoods, oceans, sunsets, and Hollywood adorn the apartment. Tyra then greets them at the house. Tyra explains that she feels it’s important for her to show the girls different parts of the fashion industry and Los Angeles is where she started her career. She bids the cohort farewell to let them settle into their new base of Top Model operations.

The next day, while the girls enjoy some of the amenities in the loft, Miss J stops by. He is sent to collect the measurements of all the girls, something that happens each cycle and they all seem to feel coming when they see his clipboard. Miss J has a kiki with the girls while they all take their turns. Brita is self-conscious about her weight. That night they receive another Tyra Mail message: “Who will get cut? Find out tomorrow. Be ready at 9 A.M.”

Makeovers[]

Last night’s Tyra Mail causes a buzz among the group, and they are off to a hair salon where Tyra is waiting to tell them that they are getting makeovers. She introduces them to Guy, the director of the makeovers, Carmen, who does their nails, and Mokoko on makeup. Following their makeovers, they will participate in a topless photoshoot.

  • Sarah: a Peter Pan-inspired haircut
  • Michelle: has an ethereal look so she is going ice blonde
  • Noelle: getting a blowout for extra fierceness
  • Tatiana: going dark and rich à la Paulina Porizkova
  • Tiffany: has a personality that can work with long hair extensions
  • Kahlen: getting a weave à la Carmen Kass
  • Brittany: needs to go shorter, with bolder bangs for more oomph
  • Christina: getting deeper, darker, fuller hair to compliment her Vogue-esque face
  • Rebecca: going longer and fuller for lusciousness
  • Brita: waves like princess-bride
  • Lluvy: she gives Tyra “new type of Shelley DuVall” so she is going red
  • Keenyah: getting a Vidal Sassoon-like asymmetrical bang
  • Naima: going honey blonde
  • Brandy: getting nothing done because she’s fierce

Brandy is not pleased to hear that nothing will be done and asks if they would take a look because she does not want to keep her afro. Miss J looks at her hair and agrees they can freshen her up and she is pleased. Kahlen is the first to take her photo, and right before she’s ready to pose Miss J tells her the shot is topless. Keenyah is under considerable pain as her hair is braided. When the stylist is finished with her, Brandy’s mood sours and verbalizes a bad attitude. Michelle is very uncomfortable getting her hair bleached as it is her first time with the experience. She stays silent despite visibly in pain and some of the girls are impressed. Sarah loves her pixie cut and says she feels like a model now. Keenyah is dreading her haircut, and she defies her hairdresser, Mr. Jay and Miss J, but is quite pleased with the result. Tyra addresses them when they are all finished and calls out the two girls who complained about their makeovers, not happy. This will affect their judging, she says. Back at the house they find Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 13 of you will continue on in hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

The first panel of the cycle is introduced. The prizes this cycle feature a modeling contract with Ford Models, a fashion spread in Elle magazine and a $100,000 contract with CoverGirl cosmetics. The judges are the cycle’s regular judges Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker and Nolé Marin.

  • Naima: a first photograph pulled off well
  • Noelle: notably did not keep her new blowout for the panel. A very strong shot
  • Christina: gorgeous photo with beautiful eyes
  • Michelle: commended for bearing the pain of the makeover. Good body but not face in the photo
  • Tatiana: had the most moves
  • Brita: face in photo looked worried, but looks good in person
  • Sarah: hot shot, fun to work with
  • Kahlen: really great shot, a bit frumpy in person
  • Brittany: good posing, a bit too sexy rather than elegant
  • Keenyah: hair not looking right at panel. Tyra upset with her conduct on set. Gorgeous photo
  • Lluvy: looks like “sleepy alien”, needs to step it up
  • Tiffany: best shot is a great product. Took some time and direction to get there
  • Rebecca: fashion forward; “hot.”
  • Brandy: critique is focused on behavior, not so much her photo
