Episode[]

Nik is still a bit aggrieved that Jayla took her line for the previous commercial; Jayla is defensive and expresses disdain right back at her. The next morning, Tyra arrives at the house bright and early to announce that they’re doing a photoshoot where she will be coaching. It’s happening right in the backyard, and they’re going for a black-and-white frame that’s edgy, dark, and mysterious. Tyra puts Vaseline on their face and hair to style their look instead of makeup. It’s very casual and bare-bones, and she also takes this opportunity to coach the girls in posing. They keep this session short and sweet, and after wrapping Tyra Mail is announced: “Are you a diamond in the rough?”

Kim and Kyle are sharing a moment as they have become best friends in the house. They chat about what they’re going home to, why they’ve come to the competition, and how their lives might change afterward. The girls then arrive at a park where they are greeted by Eric Viskovicz, a trainer at Camp Technique. Since top models need to be tougher than tough, today they have an obstacle course set up to test the girls’ physical strength and endurance. Lisa goes first and is excited, and she does very well and gets covered in mud. Eric hints that the idea behind the course is not really about the physicality, but about how willing the models are to get dirty–literally–and hints at what’s to come. Once they all complete the course, Eric gives them another piece of Tyra Mail: “You’re dirty. You’re grimy. You’re stinky. You’re smelly. So today, you’re gonna have to fake the funk.”

Challenge[]

The girls are left covered in mud as they are driven directly from the park to the locale of their next challenge. They arrive at a fashion studio where they are greeted by Brandon Holley, an editor at Elle Girl. Marie and Laurie, art directors at the magazine, are also there with her and the three of them sit down with each girl for an interview; they are testing the girls’ poise, personality, and eloquence. They finish the interviews with a few Polaroids in their muddy looks. Once completed, the group convenes and Brandon says that the winner of this challenge will win a one-on-one coaching session with a top figure in the industry. But first their critiques: Lisa has great energy; Jayla seems stressed and about to crack; Bre shows confidence but that doesn’t read in the Polaroids; Nik needs a little bit more energy; Nicole’s “America’s Sweetheart” look is great and something that they look for; Kim is tough and unique but needs versatility; Kyle is highly relatable and striking. Ultimately, they decided Lisa is the winner.

The girls return home to clean up, and then Lisa is off to her “fashion crash course” that she won from the challenge. Todd Hallman, celebrity stylist, greets her at a fancy looking downtown loft. He shows her some looks and clothes and they will have a styling session and try some out with her. Meanwhile, back at the house, the girls are still waiting for their turn in the showers after their muddy day. Kim and Jayla bicker back and forth. There is some more Tyra Mail to read in the evening: “Vroom Vroom. Be ready tomorrow at 8:15 a.m.”

Photoshoot[]

At the studio the next morning Jay Manuel begins to explain the concept of the photoshoot. They are going to ride the fine line between sexy and sleazy in a shoot for the new Ford Fusion. To make a sizzling ad campaign, the models must transform into modern versions of 1940s pin-up girls. The winner of the entire competition will have their product featured in the real ad campaign. Kim is worried that this photoshoot is too feminine and that she won’t be able to deliver. The girls get into hair, makeup, and costume that features red lips, tight corsets, and high curls. The photoshoot begins with photographer Richard Dean coaching Lisa. Lisa gives good poses and awareness of her body. Jayla looks beautiful in her makeup with lovely smiles. Nicole begins a little bit stiff and distracted; Mr. Jay has to get up on set with her for a little pep talk, but eventually coaxes out some pretty smiles and sexy poses from her. Kim starts off with a feminine touch but she relaxes into her more masculine habits. She looks really girly and sexy in her bright red corset and it's the most feminine Mr. Jay has ever seen her. Nik struggles a bit in the beginning, but she takes some strong shots in the latter half; she’s a bit upset to hear Mr. Jay commenting on her struggle. Kyle looks great in her shoot even if she’s worried about her facial expressions. Bre is extremely uncomfortable in her corset so much so that she looks distracted in her photos. The models return to the house to find some Tyra Mail waiting for them: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only six will continue with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

Lisa thinks that everyone should not sit around and dread the upcoming panel, so the girls have a night out at Venice Cantina where they party and let loose a bit. Kyle is a bit somber even at the restaurant, and Nik doesn’t feel much better. Close behind this fun impends the scariest part of the week.

Tonight’s panel consists of Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, and Twiggy. This week’s guest judge is photographer Richard Dean. To reinforce this photoshoot’s concept, Tyra asks each model to visually express what they think sexy means to them without getting sleazy. They have three minutes to put together a look from a room of clothes and accessories. Individually, they display their chosen looks to the judges. Afterwards they receive their evaluations.

  • Lisa: shows white tank and jeans–classically sexy, judges approve; head shot by Tyra is striking and beautiful; she looks like a good actress in her pin-up shot
  • Nicole: frumpy looking strapless black dress with flip-flops which judges do not like; wonderful head shots, if there’s a little lack of variety; judges are a bit torn about her pin-up look, from no pin-up to good subtle sexiness
  • Bre: chooses gray tank and boxer shorts for a cozy night-in look; very natural look in her head shot which comes to her surprise; pin-up pose is great but her face looks like she’s thinking too much
  • Kyle: comes out in simple tank with black mini-skirt which makes judges question her taste; head shot is a bit of “deer in headlights”; figure in the pin-up photo is great but her face lacks expression
  • Jayla: walks out with bra and jeans with the button unclasped, which the judges love; head shot is decent but her hand gesture is a bit wonky; her pin-up photo rests on pretty but there’s not much to play with
  • Nik: plays to the sexiness of a little black dress for a night-out look but it falls a bit short; head shot is raw, sexy, and haunting; needs a bit more exaggeration in the pin-up photo as she doesn’t have many curves
  • Kim: shows a preppy tennis outfit and judges like the fantasy she’s selling; her headshot demonstrates butch which Kim is known for, for better or for worse; Tyra shocked by her film–she gives feminine and pin-up and potential

The judges largely have good things to say about the girls. They performed well overall. The flaws of the girls are apparent too, where there’s nothing new but rather falling into old bad habits.
