"The Girls Go Bald" is the second episode of Cycle 6 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 8, 2006 and garnered 5.26 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
This episode starts with the 13 finalists arriving at a hotel where they are surprised by Mr. Jay jumping out of an ANTM cover. The girls are a bit shocked, particularly Kathy. He says it's time to get the competition started. The girls are then driven to the Bel Age hotel where Jay explains to be a mode isn't all about being pretty, having a dynamic personality is just as key. He then introduces Janice Dickinson. Janice explains that having a personality is finding the one thing inside that will separate someone from everyone else.
Challenge[]
Jay explains there is a press conference waiting for them with only one mic on each table. The challenge is all about standing out Gina feels nervous because she says she is not a good public speaker. The girls enter the room and sit down. Furonda picks the seat in the middle front row, nearest the microphone. She says she did this strategically. Brooke is freaked out about everyone staring at them. Jay then introduces the panel, Todd Newton, Trish Moreno, Rolanda Watts, Trey Smith and Tina Fraizer. All of them work either in the news, TV, or fashion worlds.
They kick it off by asking whoever feels like the front runner to speak. Wendy raises her hand as well as several of the other girls. Danielle however is the most vocal which annoys Furonda. She grabs the mic and says she's the front runner. Furonda then grabs the mic and says she's the front runner and she's "the fierce, fabulous Furonda." Jade snatches the mic away and says that she is the undiscovered supermodel which raises some eyebrows. Janice presses her on this and Jade explains she has the most potential and is the most different. Mollie Sue tries to interject but Jade tells her to shut up. Janice then says saying shut up is rude, she could say to zip it.
They then ask who is the biggest fake. Janice then jokingly raises her hand. Then they ask how they would deal with some of the bitches. Brooke interjects saying if they don't like her, then don't waste her time as she's here to win. Kari is called out for being quiet and told to take her cap off. They then ask about inspirations. Nnenna says Tyra and Iman were her biggest inspirations. Joanie says she likes Stella Tennant. Then they move onto biggest fears. Kathy says her middle name is fearless but they call her out for her strong accent. Sara says she tries to live her life with no regrets which Janice says is boring. They then ask who has made the biggest sacrifice to be there. Jade tries to nudge Wendy to answer but Nnenna speaks about what she left behind in Nigeria and sacrificing her dreams to support her family but saying if she wins it will help them. Janice says that's the best answer so far and they all clap. Nnenna says she just wants to stay true to who she is.
Janice then turns to Gina who asks her about being the Asian girl and how that factors in to her determination to Win. Gina doesn't know what to say. Jay says that during her interview for casting that she wanted more Asian representation in the fashion industry. Jay asks why she didn't say that, and Gina responds that she's only 21 and is having a bit of an identity crisis which raises some eyebrows. Gina says she didn't do good and was overwhelming to her. That concludes the press conference. The girls leave so the panel can deliberate on the winner of the challenge. Whilst the girls are waiting, Jade calls Gina out saying she has some kind of insecurity with her race. Gina doesn't really have a good retort for Jade and Furonda says that Gina is an easy target for someone like Jade due to her vulnerability. Gina says that due to her mixed heritage she just feels both Korean and American. Jade says Gina is not in touch with herself like Jade is who is Bi-racial. Gina starts to cry whilst Jade says to be in this competition, you need to know who you are, period. Joanie says Jade like the power trip she has over Gina to make herself look stronger.
Later on, Jay and Janice come in to announce the panel's favorite, and Nnenna is announced as the winner which makes her feel happy and good about herself. She is then told to pick 3 other girls. She picks Jade, Gina and Sara. Their prize is entering the house first and picking their bedrooms ahead of the others. Sara is really happy and says she hopes she'll be there for a while so she can enjoy it.
The girls are then driven to the house. The 4 girls, Nnenna, Jade, Gina and Sara enter first and are astounded by everything on show. The other girls follow and are equally astounded, running around screaming. The house theme this year is a modeling agency. Each bedroom has a theme of being based off a specific model. There is a Twiggy room, a Janice room, an Iman room, a Christy Brinkley Room and an overall Top Model room. There are photos of past contestants everywhere. Furonda says she's really excited and so happy to be there as it's so amazing. After they all get settled, they head out for dinner. Gina, who was feeling very stressed after her fight with Jade starts drinking heavily after being offered a bottle of champagne. Gina continues to drink and Kari says she feels bad that Gina went too far. Gina becomes visibly drunk, leaning on Nnenna for support. She says she feels embarrassed that she went that far.
Later that night, most of the girls are in the hot tub where someone says they should get naked. They try to encourage Kathy to join in whilst they strip off. Kathy feels a bit uncomfortable. Joanie then bets Nnenna $100 to do a runway walk around the pool naked. Jade also offers to do it so they split the money 50/50 but then backs out . Leslie says she's all talk and she comes across as confident and arrogant. In the end nobody does it.
The next morning, Tyra shows up to the house which gets the girls all excited. She takes them all outside to talk to them and asks them about questions they have like facial expression, personality and others. Furonda asks about the eliminated girls which Tyra refuses to answer. Leslie says that Furonda tries to get attention to seem like the bad ass of the house. Furonda says she's not going anywhere and the other girls should be worried more than her. She tries to play it off saying the other mentioned it. Danielle says that never happened. Then they find a Tyra Mail: "Let's cut to the chase. Be ready at 1:30pm."
Photoshoot[]
The girls all try to figure out what it could mean. Some think it might be an elimination, others about running. Kari says it might be makeovers , like hair cuts. They then travel to Rodeo Drive, to the Warren Tricomi salon to meet Mr. Jay who says they are here to get a makeover. He brings out Eve Salvail who got her start by being a bald model. He then says all the girls are going bald. This shocks all the girls. Jay says they are going to even out the playing field by getting rid of all of their hair. Jade is vocally unhappy. Gina is in shock and Kathy is also worried too. Jay then reveals they will be going bald by wearing bald caps for their shoot. The girls relax, Jade in particular.
They all head off to the shoot. Eve says shooting bald is tough as you have nothing to hide behind so your emotion will show much more. They then go to makeup to make them look bald. They put caps on their heads and paint them to match their skin. They are then put into makeup and decorated with Swarovski Crystals to complete the look. They all try to practice a bit to see how it feels.
Kathy is up first, saying she feels like a penis with ears. She struggles with the shoot with Jay saying she looks vacant to start but then she tries to warm up her face but looks a bit crazy. Leslie is next and does fairly well by looking elegant. Jay says she was impressive. Kari's posing was deemed as too safe but she improved towards the end. Furonda is seen practicing in the mirror by Jay and he says he was impressed. However, when she got onto set she struggled and was too awkward. Furonda says she thought she did great though. Mollie Sue does a fair job but it told to watch her hands. She feels she could of done better. Sara goes next and blows everyone away with her posing. Jay says she was fierce. Danielle also does very well with Jay calling her regal and loving her hands in the photos. Wendy is next and is told to not be safe. She does ok. Jay says Gina looks like a deer in the headlights but does a little better towards the end. Brooke is next and has issues posing with her large jaw. Joanie is called out for a lack of emotion by Jay. Nnenna is up next and has the other girls worried as she has been preforming well and Mollie Sue says how great she looks bald. She does very well and Jay comments on her presence being so proud and regal. Jade is last and struggles a little as she looks too hard although she thinks she did great.
Back at the house is a Tyra Mail: "Tomorrow, you will have your first meeting with the judges. Only 12 of you will continue on in the hopes of becoming America's Next Top Model." They all wonder who will go home. Gina is concerned about her position as is Kathy.
Judging[]
The first panel of the cycle introduces the prizes and judges which are unchanged from the last season. Nigel Barker, J. Alexander and Twiggy are all back. They'll talk not only about the bald shoot but also the press conference challenge.
- Sara: Her photo is very well received. Twiggy says she looks other worldly. Tyra says she can't believe they found Sara in a Mall and this is one of the best photos in Top Model History.
- Danielle: Her photo is also well received with Nigel comparing her to Grace Jones. She is told to watch her nostrils though as tilting up to high makes them appear bigger.
- Jade: Her photo gets mixed reviews being deemed striking but she needs to watch her bone structure as it can make her look a bit drag queen. Tyra then mentions at the press conference that she was deemed arrogant. Jade argues back saying that's not true but Nigel cuts her off for not listening as being humble is listening to criticism.
- Joanie: Her photo gets a good response with Twiggy liking her eyes and Tyra saying the picture socked her in the face.
- Gina: Her photo gets a decent review due to her cheekbones looking good. Tyra says she should wear her hair behind her ears to look more modally.
- Mollie Sue: Her photo is praised but Tyra says her film was weak and her eyes were too squinty.
- Furonda: Her photo is criticized heavily. Nigel compares it to an art piece. Twiggy says the eyes are piercing.
- Wendy: The judges think she looks sad in her photo. Twiggy feels no connection but Nigel says the sadness at least expresses an emotion.
- Nnenna: Her photo is highly praised. Tyra calls it fabulous and says her angles are her biggest strength.
- Kathy: She is told the press people liked her coolness but her accent and posture need work. Her photo is criticized for looking dead in the eyes.
- Kari: Her photo is praised for looking angelic. Tyra really likes the photo
- Leslie: Her photo is well received with Twiggy saying she's a chameleon. Tyra says her makeup in person is too heavy though.
- Brooke: Her photo is criticized for blending in too much with the other heads. Tyra says she chose that photo as it flattered her larger chin.
The panel think highly of Nnenna, Danielle and Sara. They like Joanie in pictures but not in person and Brooke is better in person than her photo. Gina and Mollie Sue's personalities are questioned. Wendy's sadness is explained to the judges who worry is she strong enough to be here. Furonda's picture is terrible and Kathy might just be a pretty girl. Jade's attitude is a red flag as she comes across as conceited. The bottom 2 girls are Furonda and Kathy. Furonda is called out for thinking she did well and for thinking she was the best when in fact she was the worst. Kathy's photo was ok but she might just be a pretty girl and nothing more. Furonda is saved on her potential to go further. She's told she needs to realize she needs to grow. Kathy is really upset and is disappointed she didn't she shine. She says it's not the end and she hopes to make it big.
