"The Girls Become Superheroes" is the second episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on September 21, 2005 and garnered 4.52 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

The girls step onto the plaza in front of the Beverly Hills City Hall building to await their fate as the real competition begins. Who else but the two Jays come before them to congratulate them on being the chosen 13 on the journey to find “America’s Next Top Model.” As Beverly Hills is where all the stars are, the girls embark on a tour of celebrity homes on a double-decker bus guided by Robin Leach, host of the television show Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. The tour concludes in front of an ultra-modern ranch house, which belongs to the girls for the competition! In typical Top Model fashion, there are various themed rooms for the girls to occupy and they spend some time looking around, claiming their beds, and settling in. Some of the girls talk to Kim Stolz about her lesbianism, genuinely curiously, as they will be living with her too.

Within 24 hours of arriving at their temporary home, girls are already getting on each other’s nerves. Cassandra is a control-freak and many girls perceive her as spoiled. It does not take them very long to make a mess of the house. Duty calls, then, and the girls gather to read their very first piece of Tyra Mail: “Do you have high self-esteem? How much are you worth? Be ready at 4 P.M.”

Challenge[]

A man arrives at the house and announces himself as their driver for the evening. The girls are riding in style with a decked-out stretch limo. Their first stop is a nightclub; Mr. Jay is there already to tell them they are at the site of an industry party with insiders and celebrities on the guest list and they will be thrown into work right away. The party will incorporate a fashion show with a full runway segment. This is their first chance to impress the judges and potential clients. The girls are responsible for their own makeup for this challenge. Kim does not wear makeup, so she does not know what to do. She tries to get Ashley to help her, but in the spirit of competition Ashley does not help out. The runway is intricate with multiple crossing paths, so not only do the girls have to navigate other models, they have to focus on their walks and poise. Before the show begins Mr. Jay introduces the cast to Nate Dogg, who is the evening’s MC. While they walk the runway, Nate Dogg describes their looks and they are tasked to pose like their adjective that they hear in real time. Ashley is “sensual”; Bre gets “quirky”; Cassandra is “posh”; Coryn is “regal”; Jayla is “spunky”; Ebony is “avant-garde”; Nik is “cutting edge”; Kim is “sassy”; Lisa is “feisty”; Nicole is “ferocious”; and Sarah Rhoades is “glitzy.” Sarah repeatedly stumbles on the runway and has a hard time recovering. Half of the girls walk the wrong way and there are a few near-collisions. Miss J and Nigel Barker are seen in the audience watching everything go down.

Afterwards in the limo, the girls take some of the party with them. They’re rowdy and dancing, and even Sarah and Kim start making out. Once they’re home, they decompress and talk with one another about their first real day of the competition and impressions of fellow castmates. Lisa has a hard time understanding Cassandra as she feels she is a robotic pageant girl. Cassandra maintains that she’s not an emotional person; it’s just part of who she is. The house then gets some Tyra Mail: “Is it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s a Top Model in the making. Be ready at 5:30 a.m.”

Photoshoot[]

Early morning greets the models and they find themselves at an industrial-looking alley. Mr. Jay explains that today’s photoshoot will have them flying like superheroes. Mike Ruiz, prominent celeb photographer, is present to capture the superhero moments. Hair and makeup do the girls over into themed looks and they are hoisted into the air in a harness to pose as if they are flying. Kim has a hard time getting in control of her positionality in the harness; she is either leaned forward or back too far. Ashley is next and she can’t seem to elongate her neck for the camera. Bre tries out many different poses that seem to work. Nik totally turns it out for Jay. Kyle takes a moment to find her poses, but when she does, Jay is pleased with her performance. Diane gives very pretty face and heroic posing. Lisa serves a futuristic Matrix fantasy; Coryn is afraid of heights and is nervous in anticipating her turn in the harness; she works very hard to stay focused and Jay is impressed by her courage. Cassandra embraces a supervillain persona which turns into some fierce shots. Nicole has nice intensity to her frames. Ebony is focused and comfortable in the air. Sarah is afraid of “looking a fool” so it takes her a while to get into it. She takes one good shot. Jayla rocks her look. Mr. Jay is impressed overall. Upon returning to the house, the girls find some Tyra Mail waiting: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 12 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s next top model. One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

The cast steps before the panel for the first time, with this cycle featuring a shake-up to the regular judges’ lineup. Tyra is joined by noted fashion photographer and returning judge Nigel Barker, newly promoted runway-diva extraordinaire Miss J. Alexander, and newcomer and fashion icon Twiggy. Individual evaluations will consider both runway performance at the party and superhero photo.

  • Lisa: nice strong confident look on the runway, Miss J will tweak her walk ever so slightly; absolutely beautiful photo
  • Nicole: decent walk for such high heels; she looks uncomfortable in her photo without getting a good angle
  • Kyle: sexy walk on the runway; great pose in the photo, but not exactly superhero
  • Bre: had a bit of a “horse trot” which worked for Nigel but put off Twiggy; pose looks almost floating but lacks eye-contact
  • Kim: trying to be something she’s not on the runway; the picture doesn’t work for Nigel, but Twiggy likes her body
  • Ebony: good job featuring the back of her dress; not a good photo, lackluster pose
  • Diane: good face on the runway but walk lacked pizzazz; similar issue in the photo
  • Ashley: a bit of a boring walk to Miss J; she looks like she’s in pain in her photo
  • Nik: moves her neck far too much during her walk; fabulous photo, great legs
  • Coryn: she’s got a great body for runway but doesn’t carry herself adequately; photo is strong and muscular, decent pose
  • Jayla: she looks like she’s itchy on the runway; photo is almost there, good body but needs to work on face
  • Cassandra: walk is a bit stiff; Tyra likes her photo as she defies judge’s expectations of prim and proper
  • Sarah: of course stumbles multiple times so she must focus on recovery; photo is sexy and scary at the same time, but legs looks short
