"The Girl With the Deliciously Tacky Dance" is the sixth episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on April 6, 2005 and garnered 4.34 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
Life in the loft continues in L.A. Michelle's Impetigo is clearing out and it turns out she isn’t very contagious after all. Lluvy is worried about her standing in the competition after landing in the bottom 2 two weeks in a row. With four girls already gone the remaining models feel the pinch of the competition at hand. That is when they receive more Tyra Mail: “Top Models need to have good figures. How bankable are you? Be ready at noon.”
They are brought to a waiting room where they are greeted by an important looking man in a suit. He has in his hands several binds of paper and tells the girls that they must sign a contract. After a very short moment he urges them to sign it and that they do not have much time. Every model signs the contract and is ushered into an office; Tyra is behind the desk waiting for them. They are actually at her own office at Bankable Productions and are there to talk about the business side of modeling. Tyra introduces her mother, Carolyn London, to the Cycle 4 cast for the first time. The man who initially greeted them is actually Tyra’s father, Don Banks. She then invites Joe Guardarrama, a “really great lawyer,” into the office with them before she tells them that the contract was all-encompassing. It includes clauses granting ownership of their careers to Don Banks forever, requiring them to jump five times when they hear the word “model,” and that it’s not actually a real contract. This is a lesson in this exercise; the fashion industry can be cutthroat and many stipulations for employment can be exploitative and dangerous. To be a top model is also to be a top businesswoman. With this crash course in model management finished, the girls return home.
Between challenges, everyone has settled into living with one another. They have formed solid friendships with one another so when they have a free night they decide to go out together. They go to a restaurant and start ordering drinks. Brittany in particular is looking to let loose. She chides Rebecca for not drinking, jabs at Lluvy’s insecurity about her competition performance, and dances on the table. Kahlen thinks her behavior is inappropriate and disrespectful. The following day the loft receives the next piece of Tyra Mail: “Working hard each and every day with no play? Now it’s time to party. Be gorgeous by 2:15 PM.”
Challenge[]
All of the girls have dressed in black cocktail dresses and are driven up to a nice residential area up in the hills. They are actually at a launch party hosted by CoverGirl to premiere new looks, products and models in their lineup. Their task is to mingle with and impress everyone there. Each girl is greeted by Kiara, an actual CoverGirl model, and makes their way into the party. Jay Manuel reveals that the girls don’t know that this party is a challenge. There are several top fashion insiders from Elle magazine, Cosmopolitan, and CoverGirl who are there to judge the girls on three key elements: confidence and poise, how well they interact with others, and how well their beauty shines inside and out. Brittany acts a bit too casual and is drinking a lot. Christina can’t remember the face of the model that greeted her at that very party. Naima impresses a group with her humble answer. Tiffany feels shy about talking to people. Michelle’s Impetigo is brought up again. Mr. Jay then brings the cast together again to read them their feedback. The judges say Tiffany is “glued to the product” and they miss out on getting to know her. Kahlen’s look is well-received. Naima is a bit too quiet and reserved. They think Keenyah is very poised and would rock any industry party. Christina does not pay well enough attention to the people she meets. They had a hard time getting anything out of Tatiana. Lluvy comes off as elegant and knowledgeable about her unique beauty. They think Rebecca is beautiful. Brittany’s behavior is concerning–they feel her priority is drinking, not meeting people. Michelle did not project enough confidence and her skirt is too short. All in all, the judges choose Keenyah as the winner. She gets a night’s stay at a luxurious beachside hotel and gets to bring a friend, which is Brittany. They get a sweet welcome spread in their room and royal treatment. The other girls return to the loft to find a piece of Tyra Mail waiting for them: “The competition’s getting tougher. Are you running out of gas? Be ready at 6:30 in the morning. Brittany and Keenyah too have a message, but this one’s different: “Congratulations! Enjoy your VIP surroundings. As an added bonus to your win, you have the privilege of showing up fashionably late.”
Photoshoot[]
Lluvy continues having confidence issues. While heartened by the good feedback from the CoverGirl party, she is still worried about taking a good picture. All of the girls take a moment to reflect on Tyra’s advice so far. The day’s photoshoot is in the remote desert. Mr. Jay says that the challenge of the shoot will not only be the desert heat; he has industrial-sized fans and a large water spout behind him. They will combine all the elements to create a sultry look for the photo. Mathu Andersen, the show’s typical makeup artist, is assuming the role as photographer. For an added element, a second girl will appear in the background of each photo. Kahlen is overwhelmed by the cold water and had a hard time getting into it. Tiffany has a really good session, and Christina is feeling herself serving sexy mechanic. Michelle is stiff, despite calls from Jay for more energy. Naima focuses on the fantasy, a character, and channels that in her shoot which earns her praise. Even though she’s pretty, Rebecca’s shots aren’t reading as sexy or edgy. Tatiana interacted with the truck and tires well, citing a familiarity with cars. Lluvy tries to take Jay’s direction but doesn't impress him with her posing.
Meanwhile, Keenyah and Brittany are enjoying the day at the beach before they report to the set in the desert. Instead of being tired and cranky, they’re feeling happy and relaxed. Keenyah does her shoot first, and although she poses well, she moves too quickly to let a moment be captured. Brittany reminds Jay of an early Janice Dickinson in look and pose. They both finish feeling confident. More Tyra Mail that evening: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only nine of you will continue on in hopes of becoming ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
The panel reconvenes as it is time to make the fifth cut. The judges are Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, and Nolé Marin, with guest judge Mathu Andersen, legendary makeup artist and regular ANTM crew member. Tyra says that this week at panel the models will be tested on how well they sell their products–themselves. That’s all she says before she sends the group away to prepare their product spiel. They’re given a bag of items with instructions: “Inside this bag you will find all the materials necessary to create the packaging for a perfume that represents who you are as a person and as a model. You will have 5 minutes to personalize your packaging and 1 minute to sell it to the judges. Begin.” Each girl makes her pitch, and the judges behave as characters based on international clients and harass the girls as they speak to throw them off. Many of the girls are caught off guard. Brittany notably volleys with the judges, getting cheers for putting on a “deliciously tacky dance” upon Tyra’s prompt. They then receive their critiques:
- Brittany: her drinking behavior criticized as unprofessional, her photo complimented as beautiful
- Kahlen: rolled with the punches in her pitch well, photo is sexy and body looks stunning
- Christina: didn’t speak well and worries about the cutthroat industry, photo comes out wonderfully
- Tatiana: flopped the perfume pitch, but photographed very well
- Tiffany: she looks decent in her photo, doesn’t give enough face and Janice does not like her tattoos
- Naima: handled the crazy sales pitch well, judges are mixed on her pose in the photo
- Keenyah: disappointed by the photo, looks amateur
- Rebecca: she sounded too rehearsed in her speech, her photo is pretty good but facial expression not quite there
- Lluvy: unsure of herself in sales pitch, the effort comes through in the photo but its not adequate
- Michelle: photo as a whole looks very promising, but close up facial expression is not right
