"The Girl With The Twisted Catchphrase" is the first episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on September 21, 2005 and garnered 4.77 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

A new cycle begins with a montage of audition tapes submitted by girls across America. Tyra Banks herself has also created her own “audition tape” that is stitched together into the montage as if she is a prospective contestant. Once again the competition convenes in Los Angeles, welcoming 36 semi-finalists to vie for a spot to be in the running towards becoming “America’s Next Top Model.”

Cassandra arrives at LAX ready to bring her experience with pageants to reality television. This is Bre’s first time leaving her home state of New York. Susanna says she doesn’t have many friends, which doesn’t matter because now is not the time to make them. The girls are brought to the Beverly Hilton Hotel where they meet and mingle on a rooftop patio as they await the start of the audition process. Ebony takes the moment to scope out her competition. Jay Manuel, beloved creative director of photoshoots for ANTM, announces his arrival to animate the group of wannabe models to stand before him; he congratulates them in being the 36 girls chosen among thousands of applicants to come this far.

The next morning the group rejoins Mr. Jay poolside at the hotel. He challenges them to show off their best poses to impress him and runway diva extraordinaire Miss J. Alexander. They’re called forward two-by-two and given prompts by the Jays for their poses. After some time Tyra shows up behind them to massive applause by the new cohort. She explains that she’s not just looking for the most beautiful girl, but the girl with something extra-special. She takes her leave and individual interviews begin.

Bre steps before Tyra, Mr. Jay and Miss J first. She’s from Harlem, New York which has shaped her into who she is today. She sticks up for herself and is too lazy to shower every day. Kyle, a Dairy Queen worker from Michigan, emphasizes her small-town upbringing and the importance of family. Kim is a student at Wesleyan University; she sets herself apart by being a lesbian with a more masculine look, but that’s not the entirety of her personality. Jayla breaks away from her life as a Jehova’s Witness to embrace vice and live a little. Nicole has something to prove as her mother favors her sister–she claims that she has a cute look with a unique personality that she wishes her mom could see.

Throughout the audition week, the girls live among one another at the hotel. They shop for essentials, do bonding activities, and prepare themselves for their turn to make a first impression on Tyra.

Nik brings all of the confidence to her interview. Immediately the judges reminisce about Cycle 4’s winner, Naima, when they see her look. Diane is a Puerto Rican criminal defense investigator who wants to leave her office job and become a plus-sized model. Susanna, who’s only 19, comes in perky while already having gone through treatment for early-stage breast cancer. Clips of a dozen or so more contestants walk in their swimsuits in front of the judges before focusing on Cassandra; she thinks she has what it takes to be a model because she is seasoned in pageantry. She cannot, however, name three working CoverGirls which raises questions about what she wants to do with her career. Ashley is very excited to stand before the judges. She works in the fashion industry already and demonstrates knowledge of prominent fashion designers. April has a unique (heavy) makeup look which the judges do not take kindly to; once she comes back in after washing it off, she is complimented. Lisa is a happy-go-lucky kind of girl who has made it this far in life without a mother figure. Even though she has been told she is not good enough her whole life, she thinks she’ll be able to handle criticisms the best because of that.

Cattiness comes out quickly this cycle in the evenings of audition week. Nicole in particular complains a lot and Bre does not like it.

This is not the first shot at entering the modeling world for Sarah; she has been to a bunch of modeling conventions and those have not worked out for her. Whitney comes from a farming background, where she sells livestock at auctions. The judges get into it with her as she demonstrates what she would do in that setting as Mr. Jay plays the role of a prize pig. Latricia is here because she loves Tyra and wants to be like her. Krystle wants to make money to donate to charity. Coryn steps before the panel nervously; she is looking for a way to help her burnout mother and give her little sibling a better chance at life. Regina comes in with long red hair which has always been a source of insecurity for her. Ebony knows that modeling is her calling; her catchphrase is “don’t get it twisted.” She also impressively knows all of her competitor’s names after a short amount of time knowing them.

After interviews are concluded, the next challenge is a runway show. However, there is only room for 20 girls in this show. All 20 girls have a dressing station prepared for them backstage, the girls that don’t have a station must join the show as an audience member, then go home. The top 20 have their shot at walking the runway before the Jays. Sarah is the only one who stumbles, though mildly.

Finally, Tyra greets the 20 girls and wants one more one-on-one interview with each remaining girl. This is their last change to pitch their claim for why they deserve a final spot for the show. They all passionately respond, although Lisa is the only one that takes the time to ask about what it’s like to work with Will Smith. Tyra meets with the two Jays to deliberate about what they have seen and heard. They must choose 13 girls.
