Episode[]
The six remaining models return home to find a note from Kyle where they typically read Tyra Mail. Kim reads: “All my girls… I love you guys so much. I’m sad to leave because I know a piece of me will be missing. I wish all of you the best of luck.” She is in tears reflecting on her relationship with Kyle and feeling lonely. Bre, having been in the bottom two last week, is rattled a bit but decides to press on with determination. Lisa thinks that she’s a front runner now that the group is smaller. She attributes the other girls’ animosity towards her as competitiveness. Someone announces from across the house: we have Tyra Mail! It reads: “Have you eva thought what it’s like to be a diva? Be ready at 11:00 a.m.”
The girls instantly recognize the wordplay and anticipate meeting Eva, winner of Cycle 3. They’re all looking forward to meeting her. The limo brings everyone to the studio Poodle Parlor where they see Eva is posing for some photos. While that’s going on, Samara D’Auria and Marie Suter greet them. They are industry professionals working for Elle Girl magazine in charge of today’s shoot. Afterwards they meet Eva while she’s in hair and makeup. She gives them some advice and insight into her life as a model and introduces them to her team. Everyone gets a chance to talk to her a little more intimately and ask questions after she gets out of glam too. After talking, many of the girls are feeling inspired.
Lisa is off to the side meanwhile talking to members of production. She speaks to the importance of networking as much as possible while she has this opportunity. Others find that behavior annoying, demonstrating a continued rift between Lisa and the rest of the group. After talking with Eva and spending a long wait at the studio, the energy is tense when they return to the house. Everyone seems quiet and somber and Lisa wants to do something about that. She dresses up in silly costumes and dances around the house, speaking in a slack-jawed accent. Everyone else watches on in amazement. The next day the house has more Tyra Mail: “Have you ever fantasized about being the head bitch in charge? Be ready at 1:30 p.m.”
Challenge[]
They drive to the fashion district in downtown Los Angeles. They arrive at a fashion studio equipped with large amounts of clothing and accessories where B.J. Gillian of CoverGirl is there to greet them. He explains the challenge: they will give direction in hair and makeup to feel what it’s like to work with an entourage. They will also be creating a collage that displays her uniqueness as a model. They will then present these collages in a mock go-see to a big manager in the industry. It’s not just about what a girl sees, he says, it’s about where she’s coming from.
The challenge then begins and each model meets her entourage. She must choose a stylist and makeup artist to get her into glam for her go-see, and then a personal assistant to create the collage while she’s in hair and makeup. They choose their own outfits with the provided racks as well as work with their team to make alterations for a personalized touch. Bre is a bit bossy to her team and worries if she went too far. Kim bounces ideas off with her stylist to make decisions about what to wear. Lisa isn’t enthused with what she’s got in front of her and doesn’t want to take her team’s advice. B.J. Gillian tells Jayla about a CoverGirl lip gloss then makes his rounds to each girl to give some makeup tips.
Everyone gathers her posters in her go-see looks and heads over to Handprint Entertainment. They meet Jean Kwolek who works closely with Benny Medina, a top manager for fashion models. They will meet individually and whoever displays the most star power will land a guest starring role on this week’s episode of Veronica Mars. Nik goes first and before she starts Benny sternly warns her of the high stakes to try to throw her off. She goes on to stutter and stumble through her collage presentation and can’t sell herself as an actress. Nicole goes next; she doesn’t look at her interviewers and doesn’t seem interested. When pressed on questions she hesitates to answer. Bre freezes up when talking about herself and admits to being nervous but Benny seems impressed with her. Jayla gets a bit of a shady edit during her presentation to suggest she’s droning on and too rehearsed with sped up audio and quick cutaways. She brings no personality into the room. Kim is shown really selling herself as a model and some industry experience. Lisa gets fired up to the point of tears when asked to sell herself for 30 seconds. The group reconvenes with Jean to go over the results of the go-see. They decide that Kim has the most star potential, and she wins the role of Veronica Mars.
Right away we cut to the set, where Kim is ready to film her scene. Beforehand, she chats with Kristen Bell for a little pep talk and advice. She’s nervous for the first take but she finds her footing quickly and has a great first experience in television. She discusses her day that evening at the house. Lisa acts like a sore loser, not wanting to hear Kim talk about it. People can’t believe her behavior. There’s more Tyra Mail the next morning: “Don’t let your fears of the wild keep you from being fierce. Be ready at 8:00 a.m.”
Photoshoot[]
The girls go to a mansion in the Hollywood hills where Jay Manuel is waiting for them. The theme of the shoot is what’s called “high fashion mad.” The models are supposed to cut loose, go crazy, and have fun as they act out prompted scenarios. This excites Lisa in particular. Nadia Pandolfo is the photographer on site and she wants to see their wild side. Mr. Jay interrupts their session with hair and makeup to introduce them to the guys from Wildboyz on MTV. Wee Man, Chris Pontius, and Steve-o join the models and Jay explains that they’ll actually be in the shoot with girls. The competition as a whole seems a bit reluctant about this shoot all of a sudden. Lisa feels like she can match their energy as she shoots first with them. She’s supposed to be enraged that the Wildboyz stole her makeup. She sets the bar high with her performance. Bre is posing in a towel, chasing the guys who stole her underwear. Bre screams to pose for her anger and eventually gets real mad. Mr. Jay approves. Nicole must react to finding her man in bed with Kim, who they joke is the lesbian of the group. She can’t help but smile at the scene for being so funny and reads as “fake’ to Nadia, but she has fun nonetheless. Jayla’s scene involves a dog in the background, so she has the extra challenge of not being able to make a sound. Nik is posing in underwear and she finds the guys wearing her dresses. She is distracted by onlookers laughing at what was going on behind her. Kim poses pool side while the Wildboyz did flips and stunts in the water. Though she has a hard time maintaining her screaming energy, she feels confident enough. After the shoot wraps everyone relaxes together. When Steve-o pays a little more attention to Nicole than the others, Lisa walks in wearing an adult diaper. After parading around in the diaper for a while she pees in front of everyone. Bre is disgusted by such behavior.
That evening they read the Tyra Mail everyone has been waiting for: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 5 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
You know about these judges. Nigel Barker, J. Alexander and Twiggy are joined by Nadia Pandolfo on the panel. The girls are challenged by Tyra to show their chops as spokesmodels with star power. They must pose with three products hidden under trays. The first is a tube of toothpaste, the second is a high fashion pose with sunglasses, and the third is a bar of chocolate that they must also speak about. They receive their notes on the challenge then critiques on their photos.
- Jayla: seems afraid of the product and afraid of speaking; judges are distracted by the face she makes, which resembles a blow up doll
- Nik: fails to connect with the products; her film was the best out of all the girls, lots of variety and all pretty
- Kim: Tyra feels she gave up and stalled; takes a great photo and creates a great scene
- Lisa: silliness pays off, she looks great while she leaps; her face looks truly enraged in her photo but that’s not necessarily a good thing
- Bre: she did an amazing job selling the chocolate, but she shouldn’t be ashamed of how she talks if she talks well; judges appreciate how into the photoshoot she gets
- Nicole: really awkward speaking, needs more poise; judges feel she’s holding herself back in the photo and needs confidence
Nadia channels a bit of Janice Dickinson in her critiques, not afraid to say what’s on her mind. They are torn between feeling proud of some girls’ progress and frustrated with others’ lack thereof. Tyra builds suspense by commenting that Jayla and Nicole are frontrunners and is disappointed to see them in the bottom. The last photo in her hands is the UK flag, because nobody’s going home and they’re all going to London!
