"The Girl Who Talks Behind Everyone's Back" is the tenth episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on November 16, 2005 and garnered 5.53 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
After hearing that nobody is going home and that everyone is going to London at panel, the models immediately begin packing their bags. Nicole and Jayla are still reeling from Tyra’s psych-out as she had them fully convinced that they were both being eliminated. Then they find some Tyra Mail: “Get ready to meet someone who’s modeling career has been based on individuality and self awareness. Listen up for a knock at the door at 1:00pm.”[2]
When that time comes around, it is Jenny Shimizu knocking at the door to come greet the girls. She’s there to give them some information about their upcoming trip and some advice for working as a model. Jenny’s claim to fame is that she breaks the conventional model type being shorter, Asian, and gay. This inspires Kim in particular as she can easily see herself in Jenny’s look and attitude; she gets the opportunity to ask about managing that tomboy affect that she’s had trouble keeping in check throughout the competition.
During one of the final nights that they have in their L.A. lodging, Kim tells Lisa that she looks old and whispers to everyone else that she’s jealous when she leaves the room. Other girls in the house have plenty to say about her in return, which is that she talks about everybody behind their back. Bre hopes that Kim will not take this behavior to London with her. This moment is interrupted by an announcement of more Tyra Mail: “Prepare to see ghosts from your past.”
The girls don’t know what to make of that cryptic message in the Tyra Mail as they ride their stretch limo to a building downtown. They arrive at an empty restaurant where they meet Kevin Frazier, a correspondent for Entertainment Tonight. He specializes in red carpet interviews chatting with the industry’s top celebrities. Whoever wins this competition will be a celebrity themselves, so it’s important that when the time comes they will always be ready. Kevin illustrates his point by saying that throughout the competition there have been cameras taking pictures of the girls when they may have not noticed. He shows a shot of Bre with her eyes closed. There’s Nik looking silly in hair and makeup with a can of soda. Nicole is seen putting a piece of food in her mouth. Jayla looks nonchalant with sunglasses on. Kim looks silly in a moment where she’s imitating Tyra. Lisa has a photo of her mid meal with her feet up. The moral of this talk is that someone is always watching and a top model needs to stay ready at all times.
Back at the house, Kim and Nicole are in the confessional booth talking about their fellow castmates. None of what they say is particularly friendly. They have become better friends now that their other besties have gone home. Bre feels like she needs to “walk on eggshells” around Kim because she knows that Kim will say "whatever" once she leaves the room. Nik does not appreciate hearing that she’s too closed off by Kim’s standard. As they’re zipping up their suitcases ready to go to London they receive one more piece of Tyra Mail: “You’re on your way but SNAP! One more fierce photo before you go.”
Challenge[]
As they leave the house for the final time, the top six reflect on their time there and we see a couple of snippets of crazy previous moments there. The girls go to Prints of the City where they are greeted by Mark, who tells them that since they are traveling they will need some passport photos. They each take a turn in front of the camera and have a head shot taken. Of course he is Mark Anderson, celebrity photographer, and the photos that they have just taken will be judged like a challenge. He decides that Bre took the best photo and she will receive a prize when she gets to London to share with Nik. After that, he shows the girls a flip phone that has a message from a loved one for each girl.
They get back into the limo and are on their way. Nik and Bre are huddled together talking about their frustrations regarding Kim, which Kim overhears. She moves over to them to ask them what they are talking about. Bre then lays it all out for her: she has talked about everyone behind their backs and it is not cool. Kim tries to defend herself by saying that she doesn’t talk, and then that she doesn’t really realize that she does it. The rest of the girls dogpile on Kim. Jayla is worked up to tears describing how she feels when she hears that there’s gossip about her. Kim then apologizes and Nicole comes to her defense. After a few minutes of tears Bre and Kim decide to put this behind them. By that time they arrive at LAX and take off to fly across the pond.
Miss J. Alexander is atop a double-decker bus outside the airport in London to greet the girls, beckoning them to climb aboard. He offers them a quick tour of the city which is a major fashion capital of the world that they will be working in as a top model. The ride concludes at the Savoy Hotel, which will serve as their home while abroad. As they exit the bus and head toward the front door of the hotel, a horde of twenty photographers jump out and start taking photos of them in their airplane looks. Some try to ham it up and others try to rush into the hotel quickly. They get a moment to check out their new digs and everyone is feeling reinvigorated. Bre answers a knock at the door to two men who are there to tell her about her prize. They are taken out to a fancy dinner in a horse-drawn carriage where they can unwind and relax. Back at the hotel Kim writes a letter to Nik because she is still a bit devastated about how Nik perceives her. When Bre and Nik do return, there’s a piece of Tyra Mail waiting for them: “Who will be America’s Next Top Model? It’s your call. Be ready at 7:30 a.m.”
Photoshoot[]
The next morning the girls are wondering what the Tyra Mail means. They think that the word “call” is the biggest hint into their first international photoshoot. They are driven to an alley where Jay Manuel is waiting for them wearing a trench coat. Behind him is a classic vintage red telephone booth. There’s a twist, of course; as the prospective models have heard, there will be photos taken of them looking ridiculous, so they must pose in the phone booth all at the same time. They’re supposed to be running from paparazzi and hiding in this booth wearing nothing but boots and tabloids to cover themselves. Mr. Jay brings out Nick Maroudias and introduces him as their photographer for the day. They move to hair and makeup right away. Despite being very uncomfortable, they have to make it work. It’s a comical sight to the production team to see six girls squished in there and trying to look pretty. They take turns rotating to the front of the booth to be shot in the spotlight. Bre looks very pretty. Lisa wants to have fun, but she does a good job toning it down. Nik, with curlers in her hair, looks pretty if she doesn’t feel it. Kim poses like an edgy top model with a serious face. Nicole wanted one more shot as she didn’t feel super good about it. Jay does not have any of that. Jayla goes next and needs to demonstrate variety and leaves feeling a bit insecure. They wrap up the shoot and find some Tyra Mail waiting for them back at the hotel: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 5 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
Tonight is the first panel in London. Tyra is joined by Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, and Twiggy; Nick Maroudias returns as guest judge. Individual evaluations will cover not only their phone booth photoshoot, but also their worst shot from when they were bombarded by paparazzi as they entered their hotel for the first time.
- Kim: paparazzi shot looks like she’s picking her nose; photoshoot is gorgeous, serene, and her face in particular serves it up
- Bre: paparazzi shot doesn’t look so bad as a nice side profile; great hip pop in her phone booth pose and she commands the photo
- Lisa: bad hair and silly face in paparazzi shot, does not look like a model; very nice photo, but needs to concentrate on being “on” more
- Nicole: looks like a schoolgirl greeting her friend; she needs to push the boundaries more, needs a little oomph to pair with her natural gorgeousness
- Jayla: looks fierce in her paparazzi shot; she is overshadowed by the other girls in the phone booth
- Nik: she doesn’t look like a model in her paparazzi shot; amazing pose and makes the tabloid look like fashion
At this point in the competition, the girls are being evaluated by things beyond what the judges can see in their photos. Live presence, personality, and consistency are taken into account now that the competition is so tight.
