"The Girl Who Takes A Pill" is the twelfth episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on November 30, 2005 and garnered 5.23 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

Nicole is upset that Kim went home rather than Bre, defying her expectations. She feels alone now that she doesn’t have any close friends left in the competition. Bre still feels disrespected and indignant about not just her granola bars, but everything that has gotten under her skin throughout their time together. She feels particularly upset knowing that others don’t think highly of her and is questioning her position. Jayla is in a similar boat, feeling like she’s doing well in the competition but has been overlooked in judging. Relaxing in the hotel room, the girls discover four pieces of Tyra Mail together.

  • Bre: “Gear up for school. Find out at 7:00am. Dress the part: Preppy.”
  • Nik: “From every twig, a fashion movement grows, think pop art, girl, and not cornrows! Be ready at 7:00am. Dress the part: Mod.”
  • Jayla: “Dress the part: Punk.”
  • Nicole: “East is west at 7:00am. Dress the part: Bollywood.”

Challenge[]

Nicole doesn’t really know what Bollywood is. None of the other girls are particularly interested in the fashion style they were assigned, so nerves are running high in the hotel room. The models step out onto Carnaby Street of London where Simon Doonan, the creative director at Barney’s New York, greets them. He’s there to teach them about the history of fashion in London. In the 1960s fashion “exploded” with London at its epicenter. He beckons them into an exhibit that shows the different styles that represent British fashion. They start with Bollywood, and Simon cannot tell which of the girls is supposed to be dressed that way. He hands Nicole a sari to help her look the part better. They move on to preppy, emphasizing class, clothing sets, and money. Bre’s look is a bit too “slutty,” per Simon. Next is punk: the theme here is violence and anger as well as rebellion. Patterns, accessories, and dark colors are key here. Jayla has stepped in that direction with her look, but it’s a bit too “prissy.” Then they finish with mod where Twiggy joins them as the originator and icon for the mod look. They want tube tops, mini skirts, bell bottoms, and the like.

Simon and Twiggy then charge the competition with their next task: go-sees. There are four fashion houses with signature styles that they girls will have to visit. They are expected to dress the part for each designer. They will visit PPQ in the mod style, they must go punk for Robert Cary-Williams, Ashley Isham specializes in Bollywood, and finally Ben Sherman expects a preppy look. Each designer will evaluate them on the typical rubric for go-sees–portfolio, signature walk, personality–as well as the look they’ve chosen in their signature style. The winner of this challenge gets 100 frames in the next photoshoot.

Before they depart, they are given £150 to shop for outfits at a flea market to wear to their go-sees. Bre and Jayla are a bit worried about finding good things to wear. Nik has the outfits picked out, but she’s not sure that they will satisfy the designers. Nicole is focused and conscious of the time limit classic of the go-sees challenge. Jayla doesn’t impress the designer at Ben Sherman with her preppy look. Nik’s mod outfit at PPQ receives interested, but perhaps confused, reactions from the designers. Bre forgets her portfolio in the car when she’s supposed to present it to the designers at Ashley Isham. Nicole doesn’t nail the preppy look either. Robert Cary-Williams does not like Bre’s walk. Nik highly impresses those at Ashley Isham. Nicole gets into punk character when she tries on some clothes and leaves pleasantly surprised. Jayla wears sandals to Ashley Isham and that leaves the team disappointed. Once they are finished going to all four designers, the group reconvenes at Ashley Isham, where they hear the results of the challenge. Nicole looks the best; Nik is the most professional; Jayla is the worst runway walker; Bre’s general appearance is least appreciated. The four designers unanimously agree that Nik is the winner. She wins 100 frames in the next photoshoot and she chooses Nicole to receive 80. Nicole picks Jayla to receive 60 frames, which means that Bre gets 50 frames in her shoot. Bre also must go first and will be unable to see herself in the mirror prior.

Photoshoot[]

Bre feels wronged by Nik for not picking her for extra frames. Nik thinks Bre is childish for her behavior last week and is no longer relying on friendships this late in the competition. The next day the girls are told that they must split into two pairs to go on a tour of London. Because of the drama between Bre and Nicole, Nik and Jayla just want to have a fun day and decide to pair up to avoid hearing the other girls complain. Nicole is shocked when they tell her; Bre is not much more enthused. Jayla takes her afternoon with Nik to clear the air about her animosity back in L.A. and they both have come to respect one another. Bre and Nicole sit down over a glass of wine to talk about what had happened. Bre maturely apologizes for her behavior and Nicole gracefully accepts. They actually feel glad that they had the opportunity to hang out in London together. Later that evening they read a piece of Tyra Mail: “You never know who will be judging you. Will you be sorry tomorrow? S.A.R.I.”

Stress levels are at an all-time high and Bre comes down with a fever. She takes some medicine but it intensifies her migraine and makes her drowsy. She reports to the set for the photoshoot nonetheless. Jay Manuel is there dressed in the Bollywood part, which is also the theme for the photoshoot. They’re challenged to stand out in a crowd. Jay reiterates the results of the challenge and their turn order and number of frames. He also says that the photographer today is special and has specifically requested to be a part of this photoshoot. That photographer is none other than noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker. He says that his mother is Sri Lankan and that Bollywood has a special place in his heart. The stakes of the shoot are high in the girls’ minds.

They get into hair and makeup and Bre is visibly sick. She’s not really complaining so Mr. Jay jokes with Nik that whoever gave her that Benadryl is trying to sabotage her. She saves all of her energy for the shoot itself and pushes through it. Jayla goes next and tries to tune out the notes she receives because it makes her nervous. She seems reserved to Nigel and Jay and gives no variety in her facial expressions. Nicole smashes her shoot. She looks relaxed and model-esque. Mr. Jay echoes Nigel’s praise. Nik starts out so strong that Jay comments she doesn’t even need the extra 50 frames. Afterwards, they go out to eat at an Indian restaurant with Nigel. This is their first opportunity to sit down and chat with him casually instead of at panel. Nigel also brings his mother out who has experience with modeling. She discusses her career and offers some advice for them. She also shows them how to wear a sari. Bre pays extra attention as she feels like the bit about the sari will come up again. They wrap the evening up with a piece of Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 3 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

The girls anticipate the judging in the hotel room and wonder about their standing in the competition. Nobody seems to know how things are going to shake out. They cannot rely on how they felt during the photoshoot or how moments from the past might come back to haunt them.

The third panel hosted in London consists of Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, and Twiggy. Barbara Hulanicki, mod fashion designer, joins as guest judge. Tonight at the panel their knowledge of the fashion styles they learned about this week will be put to the test. In another room there is a collection of saris which the girls must choose and style to update it for modern fashion. They have three minutes to complete the task, then must present their looks to the judges.

  • Nicole: booty is out for the modernity but the sari is sloppy, looks like she “fell into the curtains”; Twiggy loves the way she looks in her photo but it falls flat for Miss J, Tyra loves though
  • Bre: she doesn’t have a modern take on the sari but technically correct; she jumps out well in the photo but she needs to elongate her neck
  • Nik: unique and modern take on the sari, and great choice of color; fantastic eyes, poise, and pose, film is "absolutely beautiful”
  • Jayla: there’s a bit of a disaster with the sari, good color for her skin though; she needs to take charge in her photo when she is supposed to be the subject as she fades from the center of attention

Deliberation takes into account progress throughout the competition. There’s no question they all have potential, but the judges must analyze what they do with an opportunity like this.
