"The Girl Who Suddenly Collapsed" is the third episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 16, 2005 and garnered 5.24 million viewers.[1]

The girls wake up to discover a piece of Tyra Mail waiting for them: “Today you’ll battle to the death in a coliseum. Be ready at 10 A.M.”
So far the girls have been living in relative harmony at the loft as shown as they get ready to answer to the ominous note from the Tyra Mail. They’re both excited and nervous. They arrive on the field at an empty football stadium where all of a sudden three cheerleaders in blue uniforms call out to them. After their introductory cheers, Miss J breaks through a Top Model banner in a uniform of his own and cheers alongside them for a moment. He’s there, of course, to drill them on their runway walks. They are given pairs of platform clogs and must walk across the grass, which Miss J notes is a challenge for even experienced walkers. This, he says, is a challenge of “presence.” Girls walk and follow the yard lines in groups of three or four. Tiffany tries hard not to fall; Michelle walks “as though she has the world on her shoulders”; Kahlen needs better posture and Brandy needs to give better face. Sarah was walking awkwardly and heavy-footed. After they finished their walk, Miss J tells them that there is a pair of heels somewhere in the stadium stands waiting for each of them. They are forced to run around the stadium a bit, before Brittany finds them all waiting in a neat row. Each girl is then given an unconventional accessory to walk down the stairs of the stadium with, like dodgeballs, hockey sticks, or skateboards. Miss J doles out witty criticisms as they walk. Before he goes, he tells them to remember to have presence when walking on a surface that adds difficulty.
Back at the house, Keenyah, Sarah, and Rebecca practice walking. More girls then join them for a posing competition when they are interrupted by someone screaming that they have Tyra Mail: “Which aisle will have today’s special? Be ready at 6:45 A.M.”
Challenge[]
They see that they have arrived at a Big KMart. Miss J is there to announce over the store’s intercom that there will be a runway competition on aisles one and two. He is there with Sandi Bass, a prominent stylist in the industry. They have a “dueling” runway walk set up for two girls to walk side-by-side with an accessory. First is Christina vs. Brittany: Christina struts with an umbrella while Brittany poses with a baton. Brittany is focusing on not being too sexy, but Miss J announces that she is cut. Next is Brandy sporting a frying pan against Naima with a mop, and Brandy is eliminated. Noelle walks with a hula hoop next to Rebecca with a pool noodle and Noelle is cut. Tiffany with a ball struts with Michelle with a toy wheelbarrow and Michelle is eliminated. Kahlen with a squeegee mop steps up against Lluvy with a toilet bowl brush, and Lluvy loses. It’s Tatiana with a plush tiger versus Keenyah with a duster and Tatiana fails. Sarah walked alone, too slowly, and Miss J does not allow her to proceed in the walk-off. The winners of the preliminary round face off against one another in pairs, and Rebecca is finally declared the winner. She gets to meet a famous shoe designer and brings along Kahlen, Sarah, Noelle, Lluvy, and Naima with her. The losers must “service” the winners, explained rather cryptically. The designer is revealed to be Stuart Weitzman. Rebecca and her chosen group each get to pick out a pair of shoes to have and the other girls must aid them while they shop like a high profile client. Keenyah plays a little joke on Michelle in the stockroom and she cries, as she is afraid of being crushed by the shelves.
Back at the house, the girls have some more Tyra Mail: “Can you work with ten other bitches? Be ready at 7:15 A.M.”
Photoshoot[]
Michelle so far exhibits some concerning behavior to the other girls, with moods very different that can change very fast. Noelle decides to confront her about her tantrum in the Stuart Weitzman stockroom. Brandy and Tiffany hear them talking and eavesdropping. They overhear Michelle admitting to Noelle that she’s bisexual and nervous about how the house will react. Brandy and Tiffany decide to walk in and show support for her. This leaves Michelle feeling more confident and hoping that she can control her moods better.
The girls arrive at Griffith Park the next day to find Mr. Jay alongside Danilo, Mathu Anderson, and wardrobe stylist Q waiting for them. Danielle Leavitt is the photographer for the day’s shoot for 1-800-Flowers. Tyra pulls up with a dog to tell them that they will be posing while walking dogs and holding flowers. Tiffany finally is coming into her Top Model look. Christina has a hard time giving a relaxed pose. Brittany again tries to look a little less slutty. Brandy looks great and takes a dynamic shot. Keenyah has a bit of a struggle, unable to coordinate her pose with the dogs. Naima does not command her expressions as well as the photographer hopes. Tatiana is impressive. Michelle is statuesque. Lluvy, despite not having a conventional model look, works with what she has to take a great photo. Sarah “acts like a piece of driftwood,” and she is somewhat frustrated. Noelle tried out a bunch of poses that didn’t work well. Kahlen also photographed a bit awkwardly. Rebecca turned out a wonderful look and some great poses. After the shoot, the girls read more Tyra Mail back at the house: “Tomorrow you meet with the judges. Only twelve of you will continue on in hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
Tonight’s panel of judges are Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin, and the guest judge is Sandi Bass. The panel challenge is for the girls to wear a potato sack like it’s a piece of couture and demonstrate what Miss J taught them this week about walking. Each girl takes her turn before receiving their critiques.
- Rebecca: her walk was good, confident. Her photo with the dogs is a great shot overall. As Sandi is giving her critiques, she all of a sudden falls to the floor, unconscious. She revives pretty quickly, and it’s revealed that this is not a new experience for her, but has been years since her last episode. She is collected by paramedics and brought to the hospital.
- Tatiana: heavy-footed walk. Her face was gorgeous in her photo, only receives praise
- Tiffany: her walk needs some work. Her photo is beautiful
- Sarah: she brought nervousness to her walk, and she is not giving model. Her photo too lacks confidence
- Lluvy: she’s the only girl who does something with the sack, but the walk is not perfect. She takes a fierce photo
- Michelle: she’s not selling the sack like a dress. Her photo reads as different and weird in the best way possible
- Brandy: she looks angry as she walks. While her photo is pretty, it lacks passion
- Christina: needs to work on the walk just a bit. She’s pretty in her photo, but it also needs a little something more
- Naima: her pose at the end of the runway was a bit too severe. Her photo is met with a mixed bag of reactions, mostly positive
- Brittany: too heavy of a walk, like a horse. Good photo, but the judges still see porn star
- Noelle: her walk needs some work for a Top Model gig, but her photo was great
- Kahlen: right arm is “paralyzed” in her walk. Her photo pose is stiff
- Keenyah: her energy in her is a little boring. She looks very editorial in her photo, and Tyra tells her the best shot was the very first shot
Between deliberation and the final call-out, Rebecca returns from the hospital. Tyra makes sure she’s okay to continue with the panel and she emphatically says yes.
