"The Girl Who Retaliates" is the eleventh episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on November 23, 2005 and garnered 4.72 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
The five remaining girls are shocked by Lisa’s departure from the competition. Everyone perceived Lisa as a frontrunner, so they take it as evidence that nobody is safe despite how good they are. Kim and Bre have taken some time to reconcile and repair their friendship. There’s some Tyra Mail on the fireplace in the hotel room: “Find out the pecking order at 7:00 a.m.”
Challenge[]
Bright and early next morning the models find themselves in a park with fashion stylist Jason Leung there to greet them. There's an exercise set up to help teach them about posing. Inspired by the many statues around London, the girls will have to pose for a long time to help artists capture their image. Their tour ends in Regent Park where they find Miss J posing atop a pedestal as if he is a statue. Today’s challenge, of course, culminates in a posing challenge on this pedestal: whoever can remain in their pose for the longest and without motion wins a shopping spree. They’re going to have to get into full body paint so they can look like statues too. The girls are asked to choose their own pose and hold it for at least a minute. All of the girls do not expect the challenge to be so hard but there are surprises to make things more difficult. Loud noises from around the park, pigeons landing on them, and Miss J’s heckling add up to throw them off balance. Nicole can’t handle the birds. Nik is completely solid. Kim holds her own as well. Miss J and Jason decide Nik is the winner, and she chooses Bre and Jayla to bring along on the shopping spree worth $15,000.
Nicole is very vocal about her discomfort during the challenge, and this launches Bre into complaining about her. She finds her loud, annoying, and inconsiderate. Nicole is unfazed; she is not going to dim her shine because Bre is having a bad day. Later that night, there is more Tyra Mail: “Have you ever felt like you were being framed?”
Some of the girls go to sleep immediately after reading the Tyra Mail. Bre wants a snack and notices that some of her groceries were already opened before she had a chance to get to them. She immediately suspects Nicole as the culprit and decides to play a little trick on her. She steals Nicole’s Red Bulls and pours them down the drain. Kim catches her and asks her what she’s doing, and they playfully wrestle while Bre pleads with her to play along. Nik sees some drama brewing and does not want any part of it.
The next morning Nik and her posse are chauffeured in a Rolls Royce to redeem their prize. Bre is still fixated on the granola bars that she thinks Nicole stole. Nicole is back at the hotel realizing that her energy drinks are tampered with, but she does not have the bandwidth to be mad; she is just ready to part ways with some of the girls. Kim is mad that she apologized to Bre earlier because she does not like the way Bre is behaving now. Meanwhile, the challenge winners are greeted by Sukeena Rao who is the lead personal shopper at the world-famous Harrods department store. Nik gets $10,000 to spend, and Bre and Jayla split the remaining $5,000. They have fun with their shoppers and leave with lots of clothes, accessories, and shoes.
Photoshoot[]
After finishing their shopping spree they go directly to Holborn Studios to meet Kim and Nicole for their photoshoot. Jay Manuel explains that today’s shoot will be for Olay Quench, a new body lotion. The theme of the shoot will be recreating classic art with a modern twist. Kim is assigned the Birth of Venus; Nicole will be the Girl with a Pearl Earring; Nik has DaVinci’s Vitruvian Man; Bre must convey subtlety as the Mona Lisa; Jayla is going to serve neck as Whistler’s Mother. Before they move to hair and makeup, Twiggy arrives on the set to introduce to the girls the photographer who changed her life, Barry Lategan. He will be the one to shoot them today.
Kim decides to confront Bre about the Red Bulls at this moment leading up to the start of the shoot. She asks if Bre is planning on replacing them. This pisses Bre off immediately and she tells her that they’re not going to talk about that right now. Kim’s attempt to mediate backfires and she begins the photoshoot a bit distracted. She poses in a clamshell and she has lots of trouble finding grace in her stance. Nik goes next and stretches her limbs to imitate her painting. She impresses Barry with her posing. Jayla is confident that she can take a demure painting and make it modern and sexy, and she delivers. Nicole is focused despite the house drama following her to the set. Mr. Jay is very pleased with what she is able to deliver and sees progress as a model. Bre is graceful during her shoot too and Barry and Jay have nothing but good things to say to her as she poses.
Once they are finished with their photoshoot Nicole tries to talk to Bre about Granola-bar-gate. Bre is unreceptive and refuses to apologize for the Red Bulls or accept that Nicole did not touch her granola bars. Nicole maintains that she did not do anything wrong and Bre is blaming her because she does not like her and no other reason. They each get heated but then walk away without resolving the issue. When they return to the hotel that evening, there’s Tyra Mail waiting to be read: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 4 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
On the panel tonight is Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Twiggy, and Barry Lategan. To reiterate this week’s theme of statuesque posing, each model must strike and hold a stoic pose for a whole minute before the judges. The judges pull out silly hats and water guns while making noise to try to throw them off.
- Nicole: handles herself during her pose pretty well, although the pose itself is awkward; the look in her eye is great in her shot, but Tyra notes her roll as a whole is rather weak
- Nik: she does the best job of all posing, excellent focus; she looks amazing and is perfectly consistent and her face straight-on looks good too
- Bre: good strategy to “look to the heavens” while posing to maintain concentration; her Mona Lisa recreation is regal and the mood of the painting is preserved
- Kim: excellent job posing amidst distraction, she does not crack once; her face is lacking expression but needs to soften her hands.
- Jayla: does the worst during the posing challenge; her profile in her photo is beautiful and she has lovely poise, but Mr. Jay leaves a note about her dismissiveness of him on set
There’s a tense moment between Bre and Kim, when Tyra brings up the fact that there was drama from the house brought to the set. Bre denies that she was talking about it and that Kim started it. Nicole and Kim try to defend themselves and Tyra does not like the fact that Bre retaliated based on an assumption. Bre is twitchy and distracted in the background after her evaluation. While the judges deliberate, she explodes at Kim for throwing her under the bus. They aren’t able to resolve their differences.
