"The Girl Who Pushes Tyra Over the Edge" is the seventh episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on April 13, 2005 and garnered 5.49 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

As the competition gets stiffer the girls’ worries intensify. Rebecca is worried that she can’t shake her girl-scout-like innocent look while Kahlen doesn’t know how to project confidence that judges will buy. This episode’s activity starts with a night out at Dolce, a fancy restaurant owned by Ashton Kutcher. Tiffany is exposed to more food that she is unfamiliar with, and feels like a fish out of water. After dinner, there is Tyra Mail waiting for them at the loft: “You’ve walked the walk, but can you talk the talk? Be ready at 11 AM.”

The next day the models pull up to a storefront where Christina notices the comedy and tragedy masks on the Palos Verdes Players sign outside. They find themselves in a small theater with a scene set up on the stage. Larry Moss, acting teacher and dialect coach, greets them. Since models and actors often pull from the same bag of tricks, he is there to help them increase their repertoire of skills. He asks them to imitate his Cockney accent and they echo him. One at a time the girls are called forward to individually repeat after him. Some are more successful than others at doing any sort of accent. At the end of the lesson, Larry gives the girls a script to study tonight and warns them that they will be tested on what they covered today. Tiffany in particular is worried about being able to deliver the lines and relies on her grandmother for support. Michelle, having theater experience, is feeling confident that she can win the challenge.

Challenge[]

They return to the theater where Larry is there to greet them yet again. He is not the judge of the challenge, however, and he then introduces the cast to the actor Boris Kodjoe. The girls are very excited and find that this challenge will be all the more difficult doing it with a hot actor. They are given ten minutes to get ready for their scene; they are responsible for their own hair and makeup and they have a bag of raggedy clothes to choose from to style. They’re all acting their pants off, having periods of good work and then some forgetting their lines. Naima makes a lasting impression, and Michelle really gets into it. Tiffany misses the mark and makes her best effort. She becomes embarrassed but laughs it off. Boris loves Brittany’s accent; Tatiana struggles to remember her lines; Kahlen swore too much for the scene; Christina missed a good chunk of lines; Michelle lacks eye contact; Rebecca lacks commitment; Naima acts and speaks very well; Keenyah makes a good connection; he, um, loves Tiffany’s hat. Before announcing the winner, Boris says that the prize for winning the challenge is $10,000 in diamonds to split with two friends and the girls initially do not believe him. Naima is announced as the winner while Michelle is disappointed. Naima chooses Michelle and Tatiana to share her prize.

The girls review the challenge and how different speech means different things to people. Tiffany is coming to realize that it is difficult to change her standards to fit the industry’s expectation and it is making her unhappy. Meanwhile, Naima, Michelle, and Tatiana go to a jeweler to pick out their diamonds. Rebecca is distraught about the competition, as she wants to win very badly, and she is supported by her boyfriend. Then there is more Tyra Mail: “Top Models are never chicken! Tomorrow, the feathers will fly. Be ready at 8:00 o’clock in the morning.”

Photoshoot[]

The girls step on the scene of their next photo shoot at a nice house up in the hills with a great view. Mr. Jay says that today is an opportunity for the girls to get out a little aggression and “sexual frustration” for their shoot with a sexy male model. They will be shooting an ad for bras by WonderBra with Kwaku Alston as their photographer. The image is intimate pillow fight with feathers and fans in underwear. Brittany brings the sex appeal. Tatiana engaged with the model but was not aware enough of the bra. Keenyah has a hard time connecting with the camera. Kahlen has a hard time allowing herself to be intimate, as she is very nervous. Tiffany feels silly and has a hard time getting in character and letting go. Christina has a hot shoot with the model. Naima looks like she is having fun. Rebecca is very nervous in anticipation of her turn because she is engaged to be married–not only is she physically uncomfortable but emotionally conflicted as well. Michelle channels her background in wrestling into this shoot. After wrapping, the girls return to the loft to find a fresh piece of Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only eight of you will continue on in hopes of becoming ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

The panel tonight consists of Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin, and Boris Kodjoe serves as the guest judge of the week. For their individual evaluations, the girls are given a mock assignment. They will be a special guest host on the fictional show ANTM TV and do a cold read from a teleprompter. The speech is filled with niche industry terminology and prominent fashion brand names. Most girls flub many of the words. Tiffany stutters and initially refuses to do the speaking challenge, gets through the speech by the skin of her teeth after judge encouragement, and walks away exasperatedly. They reconvene to dole out critiques:

  • Michelle: fun photo, good connection with the camera
  • Brittany: best energy of them all, and good job being sexy without going too far
  • Rebecca: boring speech, and had doesn’t find her light well in the photo
  • Keenyah: needs to learn industry names, doesn’t photograph a good face
  • Kahlen: silly voice in speech, takes a somewhat sultry photo
  • Tiffany: too bad she has a defeatist attitude, takes a mediocre photo
  • Naima: photo falls flat
  • Christina: low quality speech, looks “haughty” but good energy
  • Tatiana: butchers industry names, looks down too far to model face

Before call-outs, Tyra addresses the group in disappointment for their performance as a whole. While they do not expect perfection, they did not even see promise in the cold reads. As Tiffany says goodbye to everyone and makes a joke, Tyra asks them to wait a minute and addresses Tiffany. Their back-and-forth escalates into the "I was rooting for you! We were all rooting for you!" moment.

Quotes[]

  • “Yes, but just not…[Tiffany talking back] This is not… [More talking back] Be quiet! Everybody be quiet! What is wrong with you? Stop it! I have never in my life yelled at a girl like this. When my mother yells like this, it's because she loves me. I was rooting for you. We were all rooting for you! How dare you! Learn something from this! When you go to bed at night, you lay there and you take responsibility for yourself, 'cause nobody's gonna take responsibility for you. You rolling your eyes and you act like this 'cause you've heard it all before. You've heard it all before. You don't know where the hell I come from! You have no idea what I've been through. But I'm not a victim. I grow from it and I learn. Take responsibility for yourself." (Tyra)

Trivia[]

  • This is the first episode with a double-elimination at a panel.
    • It is the second episode to have two girls eliminated in one episode, after episode 2 of Cycle 3.
