"The Girl Who Needs A Miracle" is the third episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on September 28, 2005 and garnered 4.77 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

The girls are reeling after Ashley’s elimination. Many perceive her as beautiful, so they reflect on the competition as being difficult and any one of them could go home for any reason. The girls are waking up and getting themselves together when they receive some Tyra Mail: “Don’t bitch and moan about this hairy situation. Be ready to leave at 8:45am.”

Makeovers[]

Immediately everyone suspects that makeovers are upon them and they could not be more right. Tyra and Mr. Jay are there alongside Louis Lacari in his salon who will be at the helm for their transformations. Tyra then discusses with the group her visions for each model’s makeover:

  • Nicole: getting a weave for more curliness, fabulousness, and volume
  • Coryn: going strawberry blonde
  • Diane: changing her hair color to wheat, “like on a prairie”
  • Lisa: for a bigger contrast to her eyes, her hair color is going to be richer, “chocolatey”
  • Ebony: braided extensions all the way down to her hips
  • Kyle: going chocolatey brown
  • Jayla: extensions to go from bob to waist-length
  • Kim: keeping same hairstyle but coloring it red
  • Sarah: edgy symmetrical bob cut
  • Nik: lightening hair for a sun-kissed look
  • Bre: straightening her hair all the way out
  • Cassandra: blonde pixie cut inspired by Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby

After the makeovers are completed, the girls will be asked to model their new looks in a photoshoot with personalized styles. Cassandra immediately starts crying upon hearing that her hair will be cut. Some of the other girls are happy to see her displaying some kind of emotion. Most of the girls are excited for their new looks. Lisa loves the new shape. Meanwhile, Mr. Jay mingles with the girls to offer them an idea for how he will style them for their upcoming makeover debut shoot. They take a lot of inspiration from 90’s supermodels, classic Americana brands like Ralph Lauren, and some edginess like in European high fashion. Ebony’s braided look takes many hours, but she said it was worth the discomfort. Cassandra expresses disappointment with her look and the changes that Jay proposes for her attitude for future photoshoots.

Upon returning to the house after their time at the salon and in front of the camera, the models find some Tyra Mail waiting for them: “Get ready to rack up some fashion cred. Be ready at 6:30am.”

Challenge[]

The girls spend the evening decompressing and relishing in their new looks. Cassandra, however, does not relish her new look but rather rambles on about her reservations. All the girls notice and do not appreciate her feelings. While she’s focused on that, the other girls wonder about the clue in the Tyra Mail and what their next task in the competition will be. The next day they are brought to a rooftop of a boutique on Rodeo Drive in clear, crisp weather. A flamboyant, bald-headed man dressed in an orange and white polka dot dress comes to greet them. He is James St. James, Club Kid-extraordinaire and expert on personal style. They are then challenged to use $500 on Rodeo Drive to pick out an outfit that exemplifies their model persona that Mr. Jay outlined for them previously. He wants to see them take it to the extreme. Only the winner of the challenge gets to keep her outfit. They have an hour and a half to shop at the boutiques, with James roaming around shouting encouragement and adding pressure. Lisa thinks nobody embraces fashion like she does. Cassandra is not familiar with a mod look, and relies on Ebony to confirm her choices.

After their allotted time passes, the cohort reconvenes on the rooftop. James St. James calls them forward one by one to display and explain their outfits. Kyle goes first, assigned “Chanel with an edge,” who needs some bigger accessories; next is Jayla with an “Yves St. Laurent Chic” look but does not come off as sophisticated enough; Cassandra models “mod with an edge” but does not go bold and risky enough; Kim is asked to keep her “femme boy” style and while successful she could embrace more femininity; Coryn, for her “sophisticated” look, is wearing too many accessories; Sarah is next displaying “Ralph Lauren chic” but chose a look that is a bit washed out; Lisa is told to be a “supermodel with a twist” and while it not giving James “supermodel,” it is giving personal style; Ebony also must do “sophisticated” but “with an edge,” and her top is not right according to James; Nicole is charged with “90’s wide-eyed supermodel” and she is a little too put together for that aesthetic; Diane is “dressy casual” and she makes good choices on her shoes and jacket; Nik is doing a “bohemian chic” look but over-accessorized a little; Bre is supposed to be “ghetto fabulous” and while she is almost there her big belt doesn’t quite work for James. After careful consideration, Lisa is chosen as the winner of the challenge. She gets to choose two friends to get in on prizes, who are Ebony and Kim. Not only does Lisa keep her outfit, she gets to choose three things that other girls are wearing to keep for herself. Ebony and Kim also get to choose one thing from what they see to keep.

Back at the house, Lisa is coming off of her win with a lot of pompous energy. She takes it upon herself to “coach” some of the other girls on how to model better. They’re not into it and think she’s annoying. They have some Tyra Mail to read later in the evening. “Seeing double? You’re not looking in a mirror. Be ready at 6am.”

Photoshoot[]

When morning rolls around they are driven to an open pasture where they see Mr. Jay is waiting for them, horses in the background. Before any explanation, he asks the girls to pick a partner quickly. Their partner is their immediate competition for this photoshoot. They will be modeling the exact same outfit in the exact same setting and will be compared to one another. Each girl is not allowed to see their partner during their shoot. Craig de Cristo is the photographer of the day, and Jay has let him know what each model’s assigned personal style is supposed to be.

First up is Nik vs. Bre. Their look is a tulle-accented gown outfitted with a blazer, top hat, and gloves. Nik is asked to embrace the environment and high fashion poses. Bre works on eye contact with the camera. Next is Sarah vs. Coryn; they are modeling a beige gown that’s also got a tulle trimming, and they are posing next to a horse. Craig likes the way Sarah purses her lips. Coryn has a hard time getting a hold of the horse for her photo. Lisa vs. Ebony follows; their look is a brown blouse paired with a flowing breathable skirt posing on a fence. Lisa gives a great range of poses. Ebony is a little less sure of herself and needs direction from Jay and Craig. Diane vs. Nicole is next; they wear a laced red dress with a black sport coat. Jay wants to see movement from Diane. Nicole brings good intensity to her face. Kyle vs. Kim step in front of the camera; they wear a feminine pant suit with an accented top hat. Kyle doesn’t give much softness or femininity or variety. Kim does a great job blending masculinity and femininity while remaining a desired soft. Jayla vs. Cassandra is last; they are wearing a tight textured and sheer dress and must look less poised and more demure. Jayla takes direction well. Cassandra has a hard time breaking from her pageant training. After the day wraps they have read some Tyra Mail back at the house: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 11 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

Tonight’s panel of judges consists of Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, and Twiggy. James St. James returns as the guest judge. As mentioned during the photoshoot, tonight’s evaluations are not individual, but in pairs.

  • Coryn and Sarah: Coryn’s panel look is lackluster but she looks like Tyra in her shot; Sarah’s makeover is great and worked will in her photo
  • Kyle and Kim: Tyra loves Kyle’s makeover but she looks like she's trying too hard in her photo; Twiggy loves Kim’s look and confidence, but Tyra challenges her to display a different facial angle
  • Cassandra and Jayla: Nigel loves Cassandra’s new look but can sense she’s not feeling it. Tyra wants her hair even shorter; Jayla lacks eye contact with the camera which she blames on light sensitivity
  • Ebony and Lisa: Ebony has no face whatsoever in her photo as it’s covered; judges have few notes for Lisa’s photo, her face in particular is complimented, Tyra even asks where she learned to do that
  • Diane and Nicole: Diane comes off as reserved and not presenting to the camera enough; Nicole has the “best shot they’d seen of anybody” according to Nigel
  • Nik and Bre: Nik’s blowout is beautiful and takes a fantastic photo; Miss J loves Bre’s photo
