"The Girl Who Makes A Disclaimer" is the fourth episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on October 5, 2005 and garnered 4.81 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

The remaining eleven girls sit at a restaurant while talking about the recent panel. They’ve now gotten critiques to apply to work harder as the competition gets tougher. Tyra announces herself and joins them in the dining room. She asks them how they’re doing and they have a brief chat about recent events. Once she says goodbye and the girls return to the house, they read a waiting piece of Tyra Mail: “Get ready to swim with the sharks. Be ready by 12:00 p.m.”

As the night winds down, Kim and Sarah break off from the group to chat. They address the fact that they had made out when a little tipsy the previous week and make clear what their intentions and expectations are. Kim did not think that Sarah was ever interested in her, and Sarah admits the pressures of the competition caused her to gravitate towards Kim. The next morning, as the girls get into swimsuits to prepare for the day ahead of them, Cassandra worries about Tyra’s comment at panel about wanting to cut her hair even shorter. Nicole offers her some advice: “if this is what you really want to do then just cut it.”

The group is brought to a nice house with a pool in a ritzy neighborhood where Miss J is waiting for them, dressed in a vintage-style rhinestone bathing suit and cap with a pink coverup and fins to match. He is there to judge them on their walk, naturally, and each girl must strut up and down the perimeter of the pool in heels. Bre looks natural in her walk; Kyle needs to be more aware of her height; Jayla is a bit scattered in her walk; Diane seems most willing to learn; Cassandra is annoyed that she is called a pageant girl again; Coryn needs to come alive in the face; Nicole’s poses are too over the top; Lisa needs to find her center; Sarah can finally walk in heels but she is too hunched in the shoulders; Kim looks a “bit marionette without strings.” After they’ve all walked and received some notes, Miss J then gives each girl a sunhat and skirt. They must walk again, this time while not only using their new accessories but dance at the same time. Lisa is all over the place; Cassandra’s only offering the same thing; Sarah is just “one big ball of confusion.” Instead of announcing a winner, Miss J calls out Sarah and Kim as the worst two, and lets them know that they have to work extra hard on their runways.

There is another piece of Tyra Mail waiting for them at the house upon their return: “You discovered who’s fierce and who falls flat on the catwalk. Tomorrow the tables turn. Be ready at 9:15 a.m.”

Challenge[]

Kim and Sarah are worried about their walks after being given some hints about what might come in the competition. Sarah needs to get out of her head and Kim needs to adjust her expectations about her standing in the competition. Cassandra is on the phone with her mother talking about her hair again. Similar to the advice she’s received from girls in the house, her mother seems to agree that she should embrace the cut. She remains hung up on the issue however.

The next day the models arrive at a theater, where they meet Sue Wong, a designer of glamorous evening wear. To apply earlier walking lessons, she has a runway challenge set up. This fashion show will feature a catwalk with a rotating platform at the end where they will have to strike a pose. The winner of the challenge will get to borrow a dramatic white gown once worn by Tyra for an evening out. Coryn goes first and she poses like a Saharan god; Nicole is an exotic Mongolian princess; Lisa is a beautiful Indian princess; Kim stumbles onto the panel and has a moment of direction from Sue; Kyle is a little rough on the entry; Diane goes too “Egyptian”; Jayla is unsure in her posing; Nik is asked to pose as if she is “on the steps of somewhere in Central Asia”; Bre steps up boldly and dramatically and is complimented; Cassandra is too stiff; Sarah is awkward up there and cannot get control of her pose or of her dress. The winner of the challenge is Bre. She will get to wear the gown to a fancy dinner that she also invites Coryn, Kim, Nik, and Jayla to.

They are brought to a restaurant for a meal of assorted caviar. They are not actually very enthused by this meal, but each of them eats respectfully. The girls who feasted on caviar come home to see that there is Tyra Mail waiting to be read: “Don’t be afraid but be very aware. Just because it’s not seen doesn’t mean it’s not there. Be ready at 7 a.m.”

Photoshoot[]

BreReaction

Meanwhile, Kim and Sarah become closer. They hang out with each other constantly, swim in the pool, and even sleep in the same bed. Sarah admits that she’s developed some curiosity. Kim’s attraction to her is obvious, but she downplays it, claiming they only made out once and that the first time didn't count. Sarah admits to her boyfriend that this happened and that phone conversation does not end very well.

Jay Manuel awaits at the site of the next photoshoot. They’ve got a massive green screen set up for a Hollywood-style shoot with a moving runway. The assignment is to walk on this treadmill-like runway as if they’re being followed and are scared. They will not be told what will be edited in to look like it is "following" them so they will have to employ their acting chops to create a convincing shot. The girls are then introduced to Mike Rosenthal, the photographer. The inspiration for the look is “fashion victim” where each outfit is going to have something wrong with it; Mr. Jay assures them that they will still look right. As the cast is sent into hair and makeup, Mr. Jay pulls aside Jayla and Cassandra to discuss their looks. Tyra wants to take out Jayla’s extensions, as she and the judges don’t think they’re working for her. Cassandra knows what’s coming and she pushes back, not wanting to cut it again.

Nik goes first on the moving runway. Mr. Jay gives her a vague description about what’s supposed to be chasing her and she has a good variety to her running and posing. Lisa has amazing body language, but she doesn’t show a face to match. Diane needs to make it a bit more believable. Coryn is stoic, but that works to her advantage for this shoot. Sarah needs direction and then directions to follow that direction, and looks uncomfortable throughout. Bre surprises Mr. Jay with how well she pulls it together. Kim just jogs on the platform lifelessly and is humbled by Jay’s notes. Nicole seems to be stuck in a shell, but she demonstrates potential. Jayla does a great job showing off her new hairdo. Kyle doesn’t seem to believe in the character she is trying to be.

When it is her turn, Cassandra refuses the haircut. Mr. Jay is frustrated with her and warns her sternly, which prompts her to quit the competition. At the end of the day, Cassandra felt the haircut was asking her to change too much about herself and she was unwilling to compromise. Lisa is excited at the prospect of the competition only consisting of girls who want to be there. There is more Tyra Mail to read back at the house: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only nine will continue on in hopes of becoming 'America’s Next Top Model.' One of you will be eliminated.”

Judging[]

The judges of the week are Nigel Barker, J. Alexander and Twiggy, with Sue Wong joining as guest judge. Tyra takes a moment to address Cassandra’s exit where she stresses the importance of adaptability in the modeling industry. The panel challenge is demonstrating a signature walk. They each take a turn individually with the judges. Bre and Nik get special focus for being good while Sarah gets an extra awkward moment with panel reactions. Kim makes a disclaimer before she walks: her walk is not up to par yet, but it will get better.

  • Jayla: walk is too casual, lacking personality; her photo is scared but still pretty, a tough feat to pull off
  • Coryn: walk is too stoic, needs to smile more; she doesn’t capture enough movement in her photo
  • Diane: needs to raise her posture just a bit; she looks like she’s standing still in her shot
  • Kim: she needs to embrace her masculinity and not try to be something she’s not; her straight-on face looks great to the judges
  • Kyle: she has the best walk to Twiggy; she needs to learn her angles
  • Lisa: her walk is safe and she’s challenged to crank up the ferocity by Miss J; she has an awkward neck angle which hides it
  • Nicole: while the mistake during her walk wasn’t so bad, she needs to practice recovery; her photo looks kind of bland, although pretty
  • Nik: she bobs her head a bit too much although she’s got the “wind in her hair”; she’s beautiful but could use some more intensity
  • Bre: her walk is “almost perfect” to Tyra; her photo lacks movement
  • Sarah: walk is crooked and bad; she has no poise and the whole photo looks uncomfortable
