"The Girl Who Loves Bubbles And Talks To Plants" is the sixth episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on October 19, 2005 and garnered 5.45 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
Nik is in the confessional booth, in tears, talking about how she is devastated to see Diane get eliminated. Since that was her best friend in the competition, she plans to look inward for strength and “be a quiet girl” from now on. Jayla is more determined than ever after a couple weeks in a row performing well. Coryn continues to feel irritated about Lisa, whose attention-seeking antics have not subsided at all. Other girls join her in calling out Lisa, who is shown drunk in the house pool and slurring her words while talking about the bubble bath she's in.
The next day Jay Manuel stops by the house and sets up a little exercise for them. He’s got a bunch of different fruits and vegetables on a table upstairs, but before he gets into what that’s for, he calls in legendary supermodel Iman to join them. Iman advises the girls to particularly take care of their skin, which is very important to modeling. There are a bunch of ways to make at-home skincare with common foods; the girls must make a concoction of the foods to make serums, and Iman explains what’s good for the skin. Mr. Jay tells them the reason for this exercise is they will be challenged to be spokesmodels for a honey banana face mask product during a talk show. He hands out cards with the different talking points they need to hit on while keeping the flow of conversation comfortable.
Challenge[]
Comedian and actor Chris Spencer is at a TV studio to greet the girls and explain how the filming will work: they will have a three minute interview with loose structure. The girls were given lines to say and Lisa is very confident she knows them all. Jayla goes first and she is not worried. She delivers three good points and demonstrates knowledge of the product. Coryn falls a bit flat and does not volley with Chris in conversation. Chris tries to throw Bre off by making a face at her and she gets angry and snaps at him. Kim delivers her first point robotically and then Chris sees that she has the talking points written on her hand. Nik is not very confident in delivering points and struggles to control the conversation. Nicole gets tripped up on some facts but handles the blunder smoothly. Kyle goes in with a plan and Chris seems impressed with what she’s saying. Lisa is a bit over-rehearsed and struggles to answer questions with accurate information; she also behaves a bit erratically throughout. Chris decides that Kyle is the winner and, alongside Kyle’s pick Nicole, will get to host a TV promo for The Fabulous Life’s countdown for Supermodel of the Year on VH1. The other girls are envious of the prize, but quickly turn on Lisa for her interesting performance. Coryn tells Lisa she needs to find another dance move and that’s when Lisa decides that she can’t take it any more. Right there in the studio Lisa tells Coryn that she thinks she’s rallying everyone to pick on her. They bicker back and forth, and while nobody joins their arguments, Lisa seems delusional and can’t drop it. That’s when Coryn gets combative to end the discussion.
Lisa feels blindsided on the way back to the house. The whole group is reeling from the drama because there really is some sort of “everyone versus Lisa” dynamic. Jayla and Nicole discuss this in a private moment and comment on the contentious behavior.
Kyle and Nicole must get ready to film for VH1. Kevin Mock is the director and joins them at the house where their shoot is set up. He asks that they provide lots of energy and personality to the script. Kyle begins reading from the teleprompter stiffly. Lisa is annoyed that she can’t be in the show and talks loudly about how she could do it better–to the point where Kevin halts shooting to ask her to be quiet. While Kevin gives his feedback to Nicole and Kyle, Lisa listens on while rolling her eyes. There’s another moment where Lisa gets drunk and feels like the victim. She doesn’t think she's being given a fair chance and is well-meaning. She talks to her boyfriend on the phone and cries about how much stress she’s under; she admits to drinking to cope with it to a certain extent.
The next morning the girls are woken up by Tyra coming to the house. She sits down with them to chat about vices. They talk about cigarettes and food and then turn to alcohol. Lisa admits that she drinks wine, but she does not admit that she drinks every day or in excess. Everyone, including Tyra, has a moment of pause. Tyra exits and leaves behind some Tyra Mail: “How well can you juggle? Find out tomorrow. Be ready at 8:00 a.m.”
Photoshoot[]
The girls are then at the scene of their next shoot for Secret Platinum Clear Gel deodorant. Today is supposed to simulate a hectic day a model can have with a photoshoot, TV commercial, and interview all in one challenge. Bill Heuberger and Jason Willheim join Mr. Jay as the director and photographer to give more details about the shoot. They will have to divulge a secret in the commercial to give vulnerability and relatability. Lisa sounds great in her commercial and she looks squarely at the camera; Mr. Jay is pleased. She takes the rush of the good commercial into the photoshoot and smiles big. Ryan Devlin interviews Lisa and she is much more focused than in the interview before. Nicole eats ice cream in bed. Kyle has a hard time nailing her lines but made up for a good photo. Bre admits she has a crush on Ryan. Coryn’s confidence collapses immediately, and she needs some laughter coaxed out of her by Mr. Jay, and then she delivers. She does not get into the interview much at all. Jayla and Nik have the same fear–the dark–and Jayla takes Nik’s line as she goes first. Nik does not take kindly to that and has a hard time relaxing in her shoot and interview; she worries as she looks forward to judging. Jayla hears that Nik is mad about the line, and she reacts with indignancy. In a confessional, she is enraged and hateful.
That evening they receive Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only seven will continue with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
The evening’s panel consists of Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Twiggy, and guest judge Bill Heuberger. Tonight just has standard individual evaluations. The girl with the best photo this week gets her photo featured in People magazine.
- Nicole: nice speaking voice in commercial, a “diamond in the rough” says Nigel; she can’t remember the name of the deodorant in her interview; photoshoot came out beautifully
- Jayla: she had a good expressions in the commercial; she got the brand name in her interview multiple times well; doesn’t connect with her facial expression in her photo
- Coryn: she feels a bit sad in her commercial; her interview is “melancholy” and not up to par; she connects well in her best shot but Tyra comments her roll as a whole isn’t great
- Kyle: her voice is a bit pitchy and sing-song-y which isn’t a positive effect; she has a good dialogue in her interview; judges are torn on her photo
- Bre: her secret in her commercial is funny and she delivered the humor very well; her interview went well and focused; her facial expression in her photo is off, like she’s annoyed
- Kim: her posture in the commercial was slouched and unprofessional but she talks well; her interview feels authentic but a bit babbling; her pose doesn’t read for the camera great
- Lisa: the best commercial, natural and confident; her interview only has a slight hiccup, but she remains focused; the picture comes out very good
- Nik: commercial is tight and uncomfortable; interview is a bit better but still uncomfortable; weakest film of them all.
Nik tells the panel she felt betrayed while explaining her stiffness during her shoot. She refuses to name names, however. Although Lisa is called first because she has the best performance across all three components of the challenge, Nicole has the best photo that gets featured in People.
