"The Girl Who Is Contagious" is the fifth episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 30, 2005 and garnered 5.56 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
The episode begins with scenes from the loft as the girls evaluate their standings in the competition and with each other so far. Lluvy is gutted that she has the worst photo in the history of America’s Next Top Model. Michelle is a bit of an outcast–she keeps to herself mostly and, to make matters worse, she wakes up one morning to find these burn-like scabs on her face caused by an unknown source. The girls receive this week’s first Tyra Mail: “You all have assets, but you also have flaws. See if you can make up for them. Be ready at 2:45 PM.”
The girls come to the Make-up Designory to answer the Tyra Mail. They are greeted by a man named Paul Thompson, who is surprisingly old, and his assistant John. He tells them they’re going to do a roughly three-hour makeup class. He talks very slowly and bores the girls, leaving them wondering why someone like him is teaching them about makeup. He all-of-a-sudden changes his voice and the girls immediately recognize him as Jay Manuel behind that hair and makeup. The real director of education for the Designory is the assistant initially introduced, actually named Paul Thompson. Mr. Jay then tells them to pair up and put each other into makeup they would wear to a go-see, which emphasizes “clean, fresh, and natural” beauty. Michelle is worried about her skin despite having both Lluvy and Tiffany working on her makeup, and she is reluctant to participate in putting the others in makeup. Tiffany suspects there’s something else bothering her that she’s not letting on.
Back at the loft, Michelle confesses that she’s extremely stressed out and has major confidence issues. Noelle is fixated on her son, Damien, and talks about him all the time. Tyra then stops by for a surprise visit. She tells them she’s there to conduct one-on-one interviews. The girls discuss their excitement, the pressures of the competition, and their insecurities. Tyra gives her advice and support to each of the girls. She leaves them with a piece of Tyra Mail: “You’ve all had good and bad critiques. See if you can make up the difference. Be ready at 7:00 AM.”
Challenge[]
The following morning the girls find themselves at the Salon of Beverly Hills where Mr. Jay is waiting for them. Instead of clean, fresh, natural looks, they are to make themselves up into haute couture looks, which calls for fashion-ability and originality. They have strict time constraints at each station with a different part of the makeup routine. Jay says that Rebecca looks like an everyday mall girlie. Brittany looks quite fashionable and gets some props. Tiffany looks like a “toasted Miss Piggy on crack.” Noelle needs to stay away from the blue as she looks like something out of Claire’s. Lluvy looks like Daisy Duke. Michelle looks like “Fright Night.” Naima is brought to the front of the group and is exemplified as a haute couture look with a Swan Lake inspiration. As the winner of the challenge, Naima chooses Lluvy and Christina to join her to meet a designer and get a one-of-a-kind item. The designer is Lauren Scherr, who makes custom handbags. She invites them into her workspace to pick out different flairs that will make their unique prizes.
Meanwhile, Michelle’s skin condition worsens. Noelle tells her mother over the phone about it, who says that she has seen news reports of a flesh-eating antibiotic resistant bacteria. This worries Noelle and she begins telling the other girls about what she heard. Tiffany and Lluvy are particularly worried since they were partnered with Michelle in the makeup class. They all become riled up, call home, and convince themselves that they have been exposed to a deadly pathogen. The girls get more Tyra Mail: There are 11 of you left. Ten more to go. The race is on. Be ready to show your true colors at 7:00 AM.”
Photoshoot[]
Jay Manuel is there to kick off the next photoshoot. Since this week is all about makeup, the girls are participating in a “Got Milk?” ad with milk mustaches. He tells them of another twist: for this shoot they are going to switch ethnicities. They are challenged to embody the persona of their new ethnicity for the shoot. Chistina is going to be East Indian; Tiffany is assigned Native American; Brittany is going to be African-American; Keenyah is Korean; Kahlen is going to be Hawaiian; Michelle is an Eskimo woman; Naima is going to be Icelandic Scandinavian; Tatiana is a biracial woman; Lluvy is going to be a Swedish milkmaid; Rebecca transforms into a dark, tanned, Italian-Sicilian woman; Noelle is going to be an African woman in traditional garb.
While in hair and makeup, Jay gathers the girl to tell them that they will be posing with someone else. He then introduces Jared, one of eleven toddlers of different ethnicities to pair with each model. Michelle is worried that her skin condition might be contagious and does not want to expose a child to something potentially dangerous. Mathu Anderson consults with Jay and while they offer their opinions, they decide she needs to see a doctor, for which she departs immediately. Keenyah struggles with her child, having a hard time coordinating a pose. Naima takes this shoot as a lesson to define herself by who she is on the inside, not the outside, as a person with a mixed background. Lluvy is a bit distracted in her shoot. Tiffany connects with her child and poses very well, attributing her synergy to motherhood. Noelle becomes emotional during her shoot because she is reminded of her son at home. Over at the doctor’s office, Michelle learns that her sores are Impetigo, a highly infectious but curable condition caused by bacteria. Brittany smashes her shoot and Jay highly compliments her. Tatiana struggles in her photoshoot, admitting that kids are not her thing. Christina has a hard time holding her child. Michelle returns for the shoot, but uses a doll instead of a real child given her contagiousness. Rebecca is a bit uncomfortable under the weight of the child. Kahlen lets her struggle read on her face.
The loft receives Tyra Mail later that evening: “Tomorrow you’ll meet with the judges. Only ten of you will continue in the hopes of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
The evening’s judges are Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin, and the guest judge tonight is Jim Deyonker, who the girls recognize as the producer of all of their photoshoots. Before them is a table of assorted makeup products. To give them a taste of the real world, Tyra tells them they have to apply a “full, fierce, night face” in three minutes without a mirror, brush, or applicator before receiving their critiques.
- Brittany: Janice calls her Cruella upon seeing her makeup, but her picture is highly commended
- Naima: her makeup is very plain, and the judges are a bit disappointed at the mall-like photo she takes
- Rebecca: her makeup is giving disco-era, she didn’t smile as much as they’d like to see in her photo but it’s good
- Keenyah: makeup doesn’t answer the assignment, but her photo is called “breathtaking’
- Noelle: her photo is decent, but lacks variety, and her appearance before the panel is not up to par
- Tatiana: giving a somewhat “dead face”
- Kahlen: her makeup look is virtually non-existent, but her photo stuns
- Christina: makeup is plain, and the expression in her photo is described as “deer in headlights”
- Tiffany: photo lacks inspiration, looks like a “madam in a brothel”
- Lluvy: makeup is fine, not great, the photo is not much better as her unique look has trouble translating in photos
- Michelle: approaches the panel insecurely and updates them on her condition, and her photo is not good
