"The Girl Who Gets Bad News" is the eighth episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on April 20, 2005 and garnered 4.28 million viewers.[1]

Episode[]

The episode begins with the girls at the loft in a somber mood after an intense exchange at the most recent panel. For the first time ever, two girls are sent home after Tyra expresses disappointment with the group’s performance. They are sitting around in shock trying to process what has happened when Tyra then joins them to address the situation. She wants to make it clear where she’s coming from and why she did what she did. She explains that she was devastated to see Tiffany give up despite having so much potential and that while things may get difficult, it’s important for the remaining girls to follow their dreams in the face of adversity. The girls then take one more moment to reflect and refocus on the competition. They receive some Tyra Mail: “Ever been visited by an extra terrestrial? Be ready to leave at 1:00 PM.”

The girls are brought to a hotel where they are greeted by Jann Carl, a media correspondent for Entertainment Tonight, who is there to teach them how to carry themselves when they are thrown into the spotlight. Each model will have a turn to be both interviewer and interviewee. Keenyah is partnered with Naima, where they are asked hypothetical questions and both give too little or too much information as answers. Brittany and Kahlen go next and they laugh and have a good flow, but they lack personal connection. Michelle’s “natural-ness” impresses Jann, who says she has an intriguing uniqueness. Christina and Tatiana say “actually” as a crutch word too many times.

Back at the house after their workshop, the girls are getting ready for a night out at a club called El Centro. They take this opportunity to have fun and let loose, with Michelle in particular really letting her hair down to the other girls’ surprise. After their night of fun, Kahlen receives a message that an old childhood friend of hers has passed away and is thrown into a state of emotional turmoil. She demonstrates resolve to remain in the competition, however. They also have a piece of Tyra Mail: “This is the eve of your first time in the media spotlight. Be ready at the crack of dawn.”

Challenge[]

The models arrive at an office where they meet Bernadette Odoms, a fashion marketing director. She tells them they will be challenged on what they learned yesterday with Jann Carl returning to judge them. Brittany is called into another room first where the rapper Eve is standing there to greet her. With another twist, Brittany is told that she is going to conduct a five-minute interview with Eve about her new clothing line. She asks good questions but has awkward transitions. Naima stutters a bit. Keenyah asks some good questions, although she takes some time to get there. Michelle’s interview features thoughtful questions. Kahlen has a hard time disguising her nervousness but she was the only one to ask a personal question. Tatiana has a bunch of good questions lined up that make Eve have to keep up with her. Christina is “fully aware” during her interview and it goes smoothly. The winner of the challenge is Christina, who will have her interview shown on the actual ET network. Later at the loft the girls have more Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you’ll finally get to rest in some peace and quiet. Be ready to leave at 7:30 AM.”

Photoshoot[]

The girls guess the locale of their next photoshoot correctly: a graveyard. Kahlen is particularly affected by the scene while still grieving for her friend. She does not tell production of her circumstances yet and tries to deal with it quietly. Mr. Jay introduces the concept for the photoshoot, which is that each girl will portray one of the Seven Deadly Sins at the bottom of a grave. The photographer of the day is Johann Wolf. After his introduction and the cast move to hair and makeup, Mr. Jay notices Kahlen’s emotions and offers her condolences and a little bit of time before she needs to get ready for the shoot. Brittany is first as sloth: she is laid in a coffin and lowered into the grave where she poses well after some direction. Michelle is next as pride: as a deceased beauty queen she struggles a bit to play with the role. Tatiana is lowered into the grave as greed: she attempts to engage with all the cash that she’s buried with but Jay is not very enthused. Christina is decked out in red as lust: she brings a sultry look that the photographer loves, but Jay notes it is like pulling teeth to get her there. Naima is green with envy: she delivers stunning eyes right from the get-go. Keenyah represents gluttony: she poses on top of food in the casket, and struggles to tow the line between campy and fashion. Kahlen goes last as wrath: Jay tells her to get angry and she gets through it without giving up. Decompressing after the shoot, the girls read more Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only six of you will continue on in hopes of becoming ‘America’s Next Top Model.’”

Judging[]

The panel of judges consists of Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin, and the photographer Johann Wolf joins them as a guest judge. The panel challenge tonight is participating in a mock press conference for ANTM’s new fictional clothing line, with the judges acting as journalists asking questions. They’ll not only ask about the line, but also the juicy gossip they’ve heard and are dying to address. The interviews are playful and fun throughout the cast. Then they more seriously deliver critiques:

  • Christina: her press conference is a bit stiff; her sin photo is not as lusty as it could have been
  • Naima: she isn’t natural enough while speaking; but her envy photo is “to die for”
  • Keenyah: offered advice on how to correctly deflect unsavory questions
  • Brittany: she doesn’t stay focused enough in her press conference; takes a good photo while also commended for being easy to work with
  • Tatiana: too boring at the press conference; she has a lovely smile in her photo but doesn’t have many good frames
  • Kahlen: sweet and real in her conference; takes a really fierce photo and complimented on how she handles a tough situation
  • Michelle: feels relatable conversationally; while she has a good poise the judges still read insecurity
