"The Girl Who Gets A Boob Job" is the fifth episode of Cycle 5 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on October 12, 2005 and garnered 5.47 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
Kim is devastated after being in the bottom 2 with Sarah. She must be firm in her resolve because she does in fact want to be in the competition. The girls are given a digital camera to use around the house and they have some fun with it, taking selfies, group shots, and silly photos. It’s seen that Lisa has a large stash of booze and cigarettes; when she drinks, she gets even more talkative and gives unsolicited advice to her fellow competitors. There’s some Tyra Mail to read: “Pluses and minuses - Who says models can’t do math? Be ready at 12:00 p.m.”
They arrive at Smashbox Studios, home of L.A. Fashion Week. Mr. Jay sits down with the group to talk about positives and negatives. Using Twiggy as an example, he gives a brief history of her career; all of the reasons she was different and undesirable ended up being the reason she became famous. Twiggy herself then joins them in the studio and delves into more detail about her journey as a fledgling model. The girls then get a chance to ask her some questions. Bre wants to have her runway confidence come through in her photos. Diane wants to embrace her curves without coming off as too sexy.
Twiggy goes on her way while Mr. Jay pivots to give the models a new exercise. On a slip of paper they need to write one flaw they think each girl has, including themselves. Mr. Jay then reveals to each girl the feedback they received and some advice on how to work with it.. Jayla does not like her ears. Bre thinks her teeth come out a bit far and has a large forehead. Nicole is too pale. Diane needs to know how to work her size. Nik needs to know her angles as she has prominent bone structure. Lisa reads as cross-eyed at a distance. Kim’s body doesn’t look feminine enough. Kyle’s neck looks short. Coryn looks too skinny and muscular. Mr. Jay hopes they learned something and will apply it to future photoshoots.
Lisa and Coryn become tense after Coryn hears from Jay what Lisa tells her often. This frustrates Coryn because she never asked for Lisa’s opinion in the first place. While Lisa claims she says things in the spirit of good competition, Coryn thinks she’s full of herself. Kim and Kyle commend her for standing up to Lisa while Lisa seems blindsided by a collective negative reaction to her behavior. After some time there’s Tyra Mail to read: “Accentuate the negative. Be ready at 11:00 a.m.”
Challenge[]
The girls arrive at a photography studio where Miss J is waiting for them. Today’s challenge will be a photoshoot demonstrating learning from yesterday’s exercises on personal flaws. Jay Goldman is on-site as the photographer. He explains the twist in this challenge: the girls will direct him to get their shot rather than receiving notes from him. They will take two photos in which one will accentuate their flaw and the other will hide it. Bre goes first, taking a shot straight on with a toothy smile; she then takes a more posed and stoic photo. Diane first takes a shot to show off her curves; then she takes an indirect angle and hides them. Jayla first takes a straight on shot to show how far her ears stick out; she then takes an angle that blends with her jawline. Nik makes her eyes as big as possible; then makes a side-eye “smize” kind of moment. Coryn first shows her toned muscles by resting her hands on her hips; then she drapes her arms around herself for a softer look. Lisa exaggerates a lazy eye intentionally; then she focuses her vision and uses shadows to her advantage. Nicole wants to look as pale as possible first so she shows more skin; she then uses her hair and softer light to make her skin less striking. Kyle doesn’t seem to understand the assignment at first so she focuses on making her neck long. Kim first takes a straight shot to hide her hips; she then twists for a more feminine silhouette. Miss Jay and photographer Jay decide who the winner is. That person gets a spa treatment as well as two friends to bring along. Kyle ultimately gave very insightful and specific direction and pulled off the best pair of shots. She brings Kim and Coryn along with her.
The winners go directly to their prize where they receive massages and facials. They take some time to relax and gossip as well. They have a lot of choice words about Lisa. Later that day, there’s more Tyra Mail: “In the modeling biz, sometimes you gotta fake it ‘til you make it. Be ready to leave at 6:30 a.m.”
Photoshoot[]
Morning rolls around and the models are off to the next photoshoot. Mr. Jay is waiting for them with a set of an operating room behind him. The concept of the shoot is to “fix” your flaws with a little bit of humor. That’s to say plastic surgery. This look is meant to be editorial/high fashion. Who better to photograph a shoot like this than one of the world’s first supermodels Janice Dickinson? Lisa’s look will be “extreme face lift”; Bre is going to get large cheek implants; Jayla is getting butt implants; Kyle will have lip injections gone too far; Nik is going to have crazy long hair extensions; Nicole is going to have a fake tan; Kim’s getting a boob job; Diane is being bound for breast reduction; Coryn is going to become a “Botox creation.”
In hair and makeup, Janice talks with each of the girls and behaves in her over-the-top manner. She asks direct and intrusive questions, and pokes and prods. She certainly gets a little rise out of each of them but keeps it friendly for the most part. Coryn joins Janice when Janice criticizes Lisa’s attitude, which makes Lisa cry.
Nik goes first with her extreme hair weave. She poses nude on a stool with her hair as her covering. Kim needs to give Janice more variety on the operating table for her boob job. Kyle gives great face while holding a syringe up to her lip. As Bre is in front of the camera she worries she can’t let herself be in the moment because she wants this so badly. Coryn doesn’t give enough softness and Janice becomes loud which leaves her shoo-ook. Lisa does not allow Janice’s earlier heckling ruin her focus in front of the camera. Nicole has a good session with Janice, who says a bunch of nice things to her. Jayla with her butt implants doesn’t find the right angle quickly. Diane in her binder can’t help but cry from the pain, but she braces it for long enough to get through the shoot.
The girls are at the house decompressing awaiting some more Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 8 will continue on with the hope of becoming America’s Next Top Model. One of you will be eliminated.”
Judging[]
This week’s judges are Nigel Barker, J. Alexander, Twiggy, and Dean and Davis Factor of Smashbox Enterprises. The panel challenge is a mock go-see. Each model must answer questions about their flaws.
- Diane: too nervous when trying to sell herself, voice shakes; takes a great photo so she needs to work on her confidence
- Kim: she needs to show, not tell; she looks like she’s “paralyzed” in her photo
- Lisa: went too far talking about her negatives; takes a wonderful shot to all the judges
- Coryn: she needs to smile more because her resting face is icy; that quality, however, works to her advantage with a Botox-themed photo
- Kyle: really connects with the camera, well done
- Jayla: she looks really edgy in her photo, the judges give warm compliments
- Nicole: Tyra feels she’s resting on pretty and not pushing it far enough
- Nik: she’s totally in control of her shot
- Bre: she seems very down, and she admits competition fatigue; takes a beautiful photo though
