"The Girl Who Flops in the Mud" is the tenth episode of Cycle 4 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on May 4 2005, and garnered 4.94 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
The top five girls are happy about their placement in the competition so far and to be in South Africa. Tyra stops by the suite to share a meal with the models and catch up with them. Keenyah struggles with body image. Naima remembers some struggles from the past. The girls have also developed a strong bond with each other in their experience too. They get some Tyra Mail that evening: “Step out on the CAPE Town and be seen. Show ‘em what you workin’ with. Be ready at 11:00am.”
Challenge[]
The next day finds the girls meeting with Jackie Burger, editor of Elle South Africa, and Paola DeVito, CEO of the National Association of Model Agencies. They’re there to teach the girls about go-sees, a practice in the fashion world where models meet with various designers to show their portfolio and sell themselves to be hired. There are ten locations set up for the girls to do go-sees around Cape Town, and they will be judged on five parameters: successfully arriving at the client, personality, portfolio, look, and professionalism. The challenge is to see as many as they can and perform their best, with the only hard and fast rule being that they must return by the 4:30pm time deadline (about three hours). The clients consist of photographers, designers, and agents. The girls scramble to see as many contacts as possible; Kahlen begins slowly, Christina tries her best to exude confidence, Naima is trying to stay focused, Brittany is having fun in the clothes, and Keenyah gets some good feedback. Naima and Keenyah exchange a tense moment when they arrive at the same client at the same time. As time dwindles, all five contestants weigh whether or not they should squeeze more. Naima tries to see more go-sees and forsakes the time deadline and is scolded for being late. They receive some feedback from their go-sees: Brittany has a bubbly personality, Naima photographs wonderfully, Keenyah is gorgeous but lacks grace, Kahlen comes off as too innocent, and Christina looked bored in front of some of her clients. The winner of the challenge receives a dinner at the home of Craig Port, a prominent South African designer. Keenyah takes the prize and she chooses Brittany to come along with her. The girls who don’t go to the party bond back in the hotel room while the winners mingle with the industry insiders at the dinner party. After they return, the girls read their new piece of Tyra Mail together: “Get ready to Kloof! Be ready at 6:00 o’clock in the morning.”
Photoshoot[]
This week’s main photoshoot challenge takes the girls to an open plain. Jim Deyonker, ANTM’s photoshoot producer, explains that they will have to go kloofing to get to the actual locale of the shoot, which means they will have to trudge up a ravine over rocks and wood. Alongside Jim and Anton Robert, today’s photographer, they’re given wetsuits to make their journey. They make their way through brushes and across streams. Once they finally reach their destination, the models find Mr. Jay is waiting for them. He tells them that their assignment is to look “gorgeous and serene” even after kloofing, but with a twist: their wardrobe is the environment. They must use leaves, mud, twine, and anything they can find to outfit themselves. Keenyah goes first posing in front of a waterfall. She has used leaves to create a bra and bracelets and glued sticks to her stomach to cover up what may be unflattering. Naima has a thin cloth to cover herself, accented with some long leaves and mud. She doesn’t connect as well with the environment as Jay would have liked. Brittany covers herself completely in mud and serves great poses while maintaining great energy. Kahlen struggles with the styling of the outfit and then finds it difficult to be sexy. Christina has a complete look of fanning leaves and twine. She is technical with her posing but softens her face well. The girls return to their hotel to find a piece of Tyra Mail waiting for them: “Tomorrow you meet with the judges. Only four of you will continue on in hopes of becoming ‘America’s Next Top Model.’”
Judging[]
The judges of the evening are Janice Dickinson, Nigel Barker, Nolé Marin, and Paola DeVito returns as the guest judge. The judging process goes a little differently this week; the girls must critique each other instead of receiving it from the panel. Everyone takes turns commenting on each contestant’s best photo of the week, and then must declare who among their competition do they think has the most and least potential as a model. After they make their claims, they receive their feedback from the judges:
- Keenyah: Tyra thinks she has a “cattiness” to the way she critiqued the others; really good face in her photo but pose and outfit were not reading as fashion
- Christina: she has a boring delivery and lacks connection with her audience; the judges are mixed but overall want to like her
- Naima: she seems to have a wall up, but she had “beautiful” critiques; judges choose a shot that’s straight in front of her face to emphasize that she only shoots at her profile and it’s not as flattering
- Kahlen: she was eloquent in her responses and demonstrated growth and learning; her photoshoot yielded surprisingly few usable shots
- Brittany: Tyra wonders if she’s learned anything throughout the competition; her photo is smoldering hot in the best way possible, no notes
