Nyle DiMarco (formerly Nyle L. Thompson) was a contestant on cycle 22 of ANTM in 2015, where he was crowned the winner.

Early Life[]

Nyle was born in Queens, New York as Nyle Thompson. He explained in 2016 that at some unspecified point, "We changed our last name from Thompson to DiMarco (our mother's maiden name)." He is of English, Scottish, Italian and German descent.[1] He grew up in Frederick, Maryland, where he attended the Maryland School for the Deaf, and went on to graduate from Gallaudet University in 2013, with a degree in mathematics.[2]

American Sign Language, or ASL, is his native language, but he uses English fluently in writing. Nyle also gets by with lip reading and nonverbal communication.[3] He has a fraternal twin brother, Nico,[4][5] and an older brother, Neal.[6]

In 2013, he had a leading role in the independent film "In the Can", an American Sign Language Films production. In 2014 and 2015, he played the recurring role of Garrett Banducci in "Switched at Birth" on the Freeform network.[7]

Post-Show[]

After winning America's Next Top Model, Nyle went on the sign with Wilhelmina Models in New York City and Worldwide, and the CESD Talent Agency. He was in the magazines Spirit and Flesh, Out, DNA Australia, Vulkan, Cosmopolitan Indonesia, LOVE|SEXO, C Homme, Obscurae, Adon, Vogue Taiwan, Sixtyninedegrees UK, PUMP, Ellements, US Weekly, Nylon Guys Indonesia, People (shot by Yu Tsai), Resident, Vegas Seven, Attitude, Prestige Runway Hong Kong, QVegas, Mr. Mag, Solstice Singapore, GQ, August Man Singapore, Paper, Gay Times, Livid, Man About Town, and L'Officiel US.[8]

He debuted at Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017 walking with Giorgio Armani.[9] He walked Thorsun in New York Fashion Week and was featured in their lookbook. He also modeled for Gripbell, Simons Homme Fall/Winter lookbook, Macy's INC International Concepts Holiday, and Tyler Oakley x Warby Parker Eyewear.[10]

Acting & Television[]

On March 8, 2016, Nyle was announced as one of the celebrities who would compete on Season 22 of "Dancing with the Stars". He was partnered with professional dancer Peta Murgatroyd. This made Nyle the second deaf contestant to compete on the show after Marlee Matlin.[11][12] On May 24, 2016, the pair were announced as the winners of the season. He became the first deaf celebrity to win any worldwide version of the DWTS franchise.[13][14]

In 2016, DiMarco played the character Doug in the Hulu comedy series "Difficult People". He was also Dylan in "Station 19", and Ben in "This Close". He was part of a deaf discrimination segment on "What Would You Do?".[15] He has appeared on "Young Hollywood", "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", "The Insider", "Access Daily", "Hollywood Today Live", "Live! With Kelly", "Good Morning America", "Entertainment Tonight", "Access Hollywood", "Celebrity Page", "Larry King Now", "I Supermodel China", "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee", and The 40th Annual Media Access Awards.

He threw the first pitch for a Dodgers opening week game, and has attended the 2017 Life Ball. He read out thirst tweets for Buzzfeed's YouTube channel,[16] performed a TEDx Talk advocating for deaf education,[17] and shot a drag makeover with Miz Cracker from "RuPaul's Drag Race".[18]

He has appeared on Tóc Tiên's music video for "Big Girls Don't Cry" and Alex Newell's music video for "Basically Over You (BOY)". He played the lead role in Dan + Shay's "Tequila" music video, which premiered in February 2018. He shot an ASL Version of Ariana Grande's "7 Rings".

Activism[]

In 2016, DiMarco created The Nyle DiMarco Foundation- a non-profit organization with the purpose of providing more access to resources for Deaf children and their families.[19] He is also a spokesperson for LEAD-K (Language Equality and Acquisition for Deaf Kids) and a signer and creative collaborator on The ASL App, an app that teaches conversational ASL.[20] In 2016, he started The Nyle DiMarco Foundation, a non-profit organization providing access to resources for deaf children and their families.[21]

On November 22, 2020, he delivered the keynote address at the closing general session of the Annual Convention and Expo of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. In the address, he drew comparisons between his experiences in education (both in Deaf schools and in hearing schools) and the experiences of learners of world languages negotiating cultural differences. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the conference was fully online, so the keynotes were delivered via video streaming.[22]

On April 19, 2022, he released his book "Deaf Utopia: A Memoir - and a Love Letter to a Way of Life".[23][24][25]

Personal Life[]

In October 2015, Nyle told Out magazine that he identifies as sexually fluid, meaning that he is open to dating both men and women.[26]

He supported Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign during the 2016 election.[27] He criticized Donald Trump after reports surfaced of ableist comments, one directed at deaf actress Marlee Matlin. Nyle stated, "There are 55 million disabled people living in America. I don't want a president who marginalizes my community."[28]

  • When he was scouted by the producers of the show, they had no idea that he was deaf.[29]
  • Nyle was the first deaf contestant to compete on the American version of the show.
  • Nyle is the second male model to win ANTM, following Keith Carlos.
  • He is the one of the few winners to not appear on a future season (tied with Nicole Linkletter, Brittani Kline and India Gants).
  • Nyle is the first contestant from the ANTM franchise to win another reality TV competition. He would be followed by Don Benjamin winning Scared Famous and Will Jardell winning The Amazing Race.
    • Out of three contestants, Nyle is the only one:
      • Who won both of his reality-shows;
      • To win at the same season number, which is twenty-two.
