"House of Pain" is the sixth episode of Cycle 10 of America's Next Top Model. It first aired on March 26, 2008 and garnered 3.53 million viewers.[1]
Episode[]
The Fab Cab returns to the loft where inside everyone talks about what had just happened. Aimee is complimented for her good skin while Lauren still feels insecure in front of the judges. As the competition goes on, Claire is dealing with separation anxiety from being away from her baby. She gets quite emotional while she talks to her husband. Dominique’s alarm clock rings early in the morning and she does not wake up to it. Claire asks her to stop with that habit because it wakes her up, and they become hot with each other. They yell and swear for a little bit as exhaustion and pent up frustration explodes. Dominique’s behavior is noticed by others beyond Claire too but she isn’t having any of it. They move on with their day, then resume yelling some more. Lauren tries to step in and Dominique throws some shots at her, which makes her raise her voice too. She is steadfast in her belief that these girls are just looking for a scapegoat but she feels hurt nonetheless. They read some Tyra Mail: “You ladies are sick! But I’ll help you get better . . .”
Challenge[]
In the cab, the partition drops and Tyra is looking at them from the driver’s seat. She tells them to go inside and get dressed. Everyone rushes into the building and puts on some red athletic wear and gathers in a dance studio. Tyra then enters to greet everyone again. She addresses the lack of pausing at the end of the runway when the models walk. Today they are going to work on changing that. They walk forward together as a group, pause, twirl and return. All of a sudden Tyra seems to roll her ankle which momentarily alarms everyone. Once they realize she is just posing, Tyra pivots into teaching “posing in pain” when a model doesn’t know what to do. They learn moves like the “headache,” “heartache,” and “menstrual pain.” They finally do a pose-off where each model poses individually for some feedback. Whitney and Katarzyna really impress Tyra while Lauren struggles to recall anything she just learned. Tyra bids everyone farewell and they return home to some Tyra Mail: “I’ve been aching to tell you that last session was actually a challenge. Guess who posed the fiercest?? Congratulations ANYA. You just won a one-on-one photo shoot with . . . Nigel Barker!!”
Anya is overjoyed to learn that she won the challenge. She gets her own ride the next morning to a studio where Nigel is waiting for her. They shoot a natural shot where she poses nude but covered in a bed. The idea is to take a photo for her portfolio that can last as long as possible. She appreciates his direction to learn a thing or two while Nigel, as a judge, gets to know her a bit better. There’s no doubt she’s a good model but he sees some doubt in her eyes. She returns to the house and tells some of the other girls about it.
Meanwhile, later in the evening, Dominique is not feeling well and is trying to sleep. Lauren, Whitney and Claire are chatting in the bedroom and review their fight from earlier. Dominique yells at them to “talk their s*&% in another room” because she’s trying to sleep. They balk at and taunt her. Dominique tries to politely ask Claire to stop which Claire refuses. There’s some Tyra Mail to read then: “Being a Top Model is a pretty good gig if you can get it.”
Photoshoot[]
Their upcoming shoot takes them to Williamsburg where they meet Jay Manuel at a big plaza. Each model will have a look and pose in accordance with a specific music genre. They have Russell James on site as the photographer. Before they get into hair and makeup, he asks them to “act out” the style of music they’re posing as. They head over to a nearby building to get into their looks. ANTM's glam team, Christian, Sutan, Anda and Masha, are all hanging out with the girls as they get ready and decompress.
Fatima begins the shoot, posing as heavy metal. She’s feeling her look and excited to get started. Mr. Jay feels like she’s trying too hard when she poses and it’s taking him out of the fantasy. He then wants to see what Katarzyna as emo music will do without direction and it turns out he’s right to think she’d nail it. Lauren comes out to the set in a bright red latex number and she looks like a star, but unfortunately she deliberately avoids pop music. Despite that, she surprises in front of the camera. Claire is country music and she thinks that character comes naturally to her. She looks good in her tutu but she looks too “model-y” for country. Dominique is among the trees in a dress representing folk music. It reminds her of her mother so she is able to convey softness like the judges have been encouraging her to show. Anya doesn’t seem to resonate with punk but her look is so convincing that Mr. Jay thinks they got the shot. Stacy-Ann poses in neon clothes in front of a turntable for house music. Russell thinks that her poses are too “contrived.” Aimee is assigned R&B and she also enjoys her outfit. She struggles to find the drama she needs for the genre and Mr. Jay suspects that her sheltered upbringing will come through for her at this shoot. Whitney must pose atop an old diving board in her grunge outfit. She uses the set, the clothes and the face and only receives praise from Jay and Russell.
Back at the loft, the girls read more Tyra Mail: “Tomorrow you will meet with the judges. Only 8 will continue on in the hope of being America’s Next Top Model.”
Judging[]
The models enter the judging room and begin the ceremony by “posing in pain” with Tyra as a group. The judges this evening are Nigel Barker, J. Alexander and Paulina Porizkova. Russell James sits at the desk as guest judge. They then have their individual evaluations.
- Whitney: her personality and feeling are captured well; Paulina says this looks like “the real thing”
- Fatima: Tyra loved her film, thinks she “totally worked it”; the position of her legs are perfect
- Anya: she works well with the set but sometimes loses the light
- Lauren: Nigel says “extremely beautiful picture; Paulina sees Britney Spears; she needs to focus on her conduct at panel, Miss J asks her to be “more present”
- Aimee: does not connect with the mood of the shot; looks fine but it does not work
- Stacy-Ann: the photo works although it’s somewhat cliché; she needs to be more fluid to capture more motion
- Katarzyna: Tyra loves the wig on her, calls it “her best shoot to date”; shows she can work different looks
- Claire: Nigel thinks it’s too “tough” for country; Tyra feels she’s “lost” and the worst shoot of hers she’s seen
- Dominique: pretty picture; very Joni Mitchell; Nigel is pleasantly surprised to see such a soft side to her; somewhat awkward pose
The judges go through the nine pictures and chat about what they just saw. This week, the models did both very well and very badly. They have nothing but good things to say about Whitney and appreciate Dominique’s improvement. Claire and Aimee were perhaps early frontrunners in this competition and now the judges are quite disappointed. Now the judges have some track record to reference in forming opinions about what they see.
